It's not actually essential but it's so much work to do the timing belt it makes sense to replace the water pump at the same time. You need to rotate the pump to do the belt anyway so there's the added risk of a leak when it gets disturbed. numerous vendors are available. I've got a metal impellar version in my 7A made by Graf which is the same as a 3B versionMike

The last one I got from Audi for my 3B was part no 034121004x but it had a plastic impeller. When I did engine rebuild I got this one https://www.sparepartstore24.co.uk/2286639-gk which has metal impeller and so far so good.

As above regards the Audi one, it'll have a plastic impellor also you'll not get your surcharge back unless it's a genuine VAG pump that's returned.
After Mikes2 recommendation I went for a Graf (from e-bay) but got a Valeo with plastic impellor ......with the car in bits on my drive it just got fitted. Beware when ordering that is all!
