I used to get 28-31mpg driving like a complete tit! 35 if I was really careful, ie never. Mine was nowhere near as tidy as yours and the 8vness made thrashing it all the more amusing as it seemed to completely choke above 5.5k!

The mk.2 GTI will show up the weaker areas of the ubersaloon S2's handling but you'll miss the midrange punch! It's also completely amazing how little grip a mk.2 has, my standard 8v used to scrabble for grip in 2nd and first was virtually useless in the wet. Braking was probrably as scarry as it gets too! The revvy torque delivery of the 16v might help in the traction stakes but just be careful and remember that there aren't 4 massive wheels driving you or (I assume) ABS to stop either! Power understeer and foot off oversteer used to provide huge amounts of amusement until it all went wrong a couple of times!

Although i still miss the S2, the Golf can still always manage to bring a smile to my face. I admit the the first 2 gears are useless, wet or dry, but 3rd and 4th in the dry are awesome, with no turbo lag. I'd even go as far to say it'd have the edge on my old S2. Handling wise its a bit better, its around 450kg lighter than the S2 too.

They are two completely different cars and i'm happy to have owned both. You can't really compare a FWD car with a 4WD car but from an owners point of view i loved both of them

      Cheers,
      Chris

Its fun, but in no way is the mid range anything like my S2. I did however "play" with a chavved up Scooby on Saturday and was not far off it for pace! My S2 would leave it for dead. But then the 16v would leave my Fiancee's MK3 8v for dead too...

(managed 31 mpg on the way to work @ 65 - 70 mph)

        Cheers,

        Steve

edited to say that I forgot you were talking about a 20v remapped Mk2

Def looking good! Goes to show what a bit of elbow grease can achieve, good to see these cars in loving hands!

Ive also had both and love them, as said above 2 very different cars, but both are so much fun to drive, the roar on the 16v with a drilled box as well makes you wanna put your foot down at every opportunity!

Actually I have seen some Lexus style M3 lights, a set of 17" Fox alloys a strut brace and some neons on ebay that I might have to bid on.

I am bored with the OEM look and have decided to go "chav"

2 litre conversion and then take it to Vince at Stealth Racing for tuning! He's renowned for his work on K-jet Golfs! Also, drill the base of the airbox (metering head on the 16v), those long stroke Golf engines just boom/roar like a beast. I took a 25mm wood driil bit to the 8v airbox (cold side only of course) and ripped out all restrictive inlet piping and hot air rubbish, was easily as loud as the induction kit on my flowed & cammed mk.3 8v. Will make you smile endlessly (and burn more petrol of course!).

I need another Golf, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms after just 2 months wothout...

                    199? Mk.2 8v next with a 2.0 ABF conversion and Digi 2 injection from a mk.3 16v. 150bhp out the box and 30-35mpg reliably too. Nice!

I did the same on my 8valve 80Sport, made a huge difference to the induction noise, almost sounded like an old-fashioned carb engine! It certainly improved the engine's breathing too - I had a pretty agressive Piper cam on that and it gave a much better top end once I filled the airbox with large holes. It reduced bottom-end torque though.

OEM is all very well but subtle mods make the mk2 a sweet car, my oaky 16v was the best car i ever had but only cos i spent time making it so. Standard brakes are even worse than S2s and the lump has soooo much more go to give for virtually no money

Exhaust cam as an inlet is a well proven mod. 2 litre from a passat is almost a straight swap, other cars include corrados and audi 80s. mk.3 engines are not quite as easy as they're tall block. Brakes are easily sorted with 256mm carriers if you've got the 239s and then a set of fast road discs and pads. Brembo Max or Pagid 8 groove disc represent the best value for money IMHO...

                            Sorry getting carried away

k-star ignition mobule on mine was great ment 95 octane unleaded with no pinking and loads of grunt. 9A block off a passat, TSR A pack head standard cams and a Magnex stainless system. Rado 280 black diamond front brakes and 16" wheels with 215/40x16 rubber. Oh and obviously Koni kit.
