Sounds like the fuel pump is on it's way out. Does it sound like a swarm of bees infesting your boot? if it is, then replace the fuel pump. GSF sell 'em. The stealers will charger about £200 inc vat, but it's about £85 from GSF.
Takes about 1/2 to replace. Maybe worth changing the fuel filter at the same time as well.Comment

Best to change it sooner rather than later!!
Mine went a while back during a very hot spell and I was stranded in the car
Went back next day to the car and she started and got me home!!! Then I fitted a new fuel pump quick sharp
Was about £75 from GSF iircComment

Think i'll try cleaning the MAF plug and socket again too. Gonna change my fuel pump tonight anyway as its making a racket . Ordered a fuel filter too but after reading a few threads on the topic it seems near impossible to change it on the avant without taking half the car apart!
By the way, Cheers for the reply. Loads of people post about the problems they have with their cars on this site but i've found very few seem to post what cured the problem!
Something which would be very handy indeed for a newbie like myselfComment

Nip - I've got exactly the same problem. Same noise from the pump/tank area, and flat spots as well. Cleaning the MAF didn't sort the flat spot, but I reckon I've got a boost leak as well.
Let me know if changing the pump & filter made any difference. I'm quite keen to get mine running right!Audi S2:

well i changed the fuel pump last night and also did the mark H mod. One of those things seems to have cured the uneven idle but i still have the flat spot, although it's everso slightly better than it was before. This makes me think that a propper boost leak test is in order.
I have checked for faults using vag-com - and have none. Could the waste gate frequency valve be at fault without it showing up on vag-com?
oh and in answer to your original question nip, i got the pump for €85.00 direct from bosch, the part no is 0580 314068 and the filter is 0450905906
Any decent motor factor should be able to get it for you but expect to pay a little more (we have an account and get 52% off retail)Last edited by robk; 11 January 2007, 08:37.Comment

The pump will get noisey if the filter is old and blocked so worth changing that first.Comment

well i spoke too soon, niether the fuel pump or mark H mod has cured the uneven idle or the flat spot
I went for a propper test run last night and drove the same piece of road a few times to try and figure out exactly where in the rev range it's happening and how best to describe it.
I found that the effects of the problem are exaggerated when going up a steep hill, which makes sense. Accelerating at full throttle from 2000 rpm to the red line i get severe flat spots or loss of power between 3800rpm and 5800. The power does come back in again in spikes. From 5800 to 7000rpm it doesn't seem to be happening but that could be because the power is tailing of anyway and its just less noticeable.
The best way i can describe the sensation is that when the power cuts out its just like when you get wheel spin from going over a wet patch on the road, when the power comes back, there's a big surge, just like when the wheels find grip again.
nip and idub, does this sound like the same thing you're experiencing?Comment
