  • S2 Running Costs

    Hi All,

I'm a newbie to this forum and after having a look through at some peoples threads about expensive running costs I was wondering if you could help me out by letting me know what you reckon it costs to run an S2.

I am looking at buying an S2 Avant in the next few months and would welcome any advice and knowledge that you can share!

    Many thanks in advance!

    Scott

    Hi welcome to the forum

    Its hard to say,
I guess it depends on what you want from the S2.
Fast toy, nice sleeper car to travel A to B etc etc

Well, fwiw, I bought an ok condition, 155000 mile 94 S2 Avant back at end of October last year for £2.8k with Full Audi Service history, and so far have spent £1k on service items (I've done all the labour my self so thats just parts) and I reckon on another £2k to get it to a very reliable and tidy state (but still standard). This does not include any un-expected costs!!!
But I suppose its a gamble whatever car you buy - just seems that the lovely S2 is a bit more complicated than most!

ive owned my avant for 13 months now, ive never replaced anything because ive "had" to apart from the radiator. everything im changing is because i want to keep it in very good shape. the radiator cost me a little over £100, but i have probably spent £700-£900 this past 13 months, and plan to spend a lot more.
i paid £5k for it and i would like to think i would get somewhere close to that if i sold it now. the most expensive thing is petrol as i use mine daily. all that said i wouldnt change for anything else, so good luck and i hope you get to own one soon!

              Hi All,

Many thanks for your info, much appreciated.

Bibby, I see on your website you had the cylinder head changed and then the engine rebuilt under warranty. Was the cylinder head changed because of general wear or because you wanted it upgraded?

              Cheers

Buy a "good un" thats in decent condition and had ALL (or nearly all) the major work and parts replaced that tend to go on these cars and you should reduce your running cost significantly but maybe pay more for the car.
Buy one that looks clean but in fact has not had all of the above parts replaced...and it starts to cost a lot!!

A rough rule of thumb is £1000 parts only PA, £2000 paying for labour. That is if you do it properly. (Average over a few years...)

I realise that every car and individual is different, but to be kept tip top I would say those numbers are about right...

                  Cheers,

                  Steve.

A bit more for me than Steve, £2000 parts PA, £200 labour PA if you do all the work yourself except specialist jobs. This includes some upgrades such as complete suspension overhaul with Koni dampers, Porsche brakes, Samco hoses , Milltek ehaust (cheaper than OEM!) and a full rear subframe overhaul not to mention LOTS of oil and other fluids!

Not a cheap car to run, especially if you do things properly and go OEM for anything and everything but then depreciation is almost negligable, I think I've lost £1500 on mine in the last 2.5 years, assuming it's worth about £4.5-5k now. Factor that into your calculations and everything looks a lot healthier I suppose!

When it all comes together on a decent road though, it's all worth it!

What do most of you get on fuel economy? I know owning an S2 is not going to be about this but just wanted to know what you reckon you get on average and on motorway miles?

                      Cheers

17-19 in town, 20-24 in the country, 25-28 on a cruise up the motorway.

Over 50 miles my worst is 10mpg, best is 30mpg. Not difficult to guess whichwas more fun

                        Average is 21 ish.

Only ever run super (Esso or Shell) so that's an extra 5% on the cost of fuel, 95 and S2s isn't the best combination IMHO.

                          18 mpg thrashing it

                          22 mpg normal

                          24 grannying it.

(AMD chip is a little thirsty but fun 280 BHP and 300ftlbs)

And whoever said "when is comes together it is all worth it!" was completely correct.

An S2 on song is worth a million dollars spent and years of heartache....

                          Cheers,

I have a modded S2, seeing 19-23 mpg on urban cruising, 25-30 mpg on long runs

Only use V-Power petrol Most i've thrased it was during the MRC mapping and that returned 17 MPG
