    My new 20v Coupe

Following on from my sold thread, heres my new toy

he's fairly stock, got koni adjustables and -40mm springs, with some fairly scruffy 17" multispokes -the cheapy Fox numbers suit him well though i think, look pretty similar in style to the OEM quattro 15s, so i think i'll refurb them - maybe powder coated white :mischeif:
    oh, ps.

A few little bits of rust starting -around the top of the windscreen, on a couple of the arches and the bootom of the drivers door. The lower door trims need replacing and theres a little crease on the rear arch.. other than that the paintwork is is great nick He's had new rad, middle section & backbox recently Needs new disks and pads but that's cheap as chips

A few things that i might ask in the technical section, the ABS cancellation switch i think is bust - it doesnt work, but the ABS and warning lamp work fine, some bulbs gone in the dash switchgear, coolant temp gauge doesn't work at all, also its got a sticky hydraulic tappet. the doors either need adjusting or new hindges i think, they are a bit saggy and difficult to close first time - guessing this is common as my old cq used to do that too... other than that he seems fine and well... and sounds awesome since i modded the airbox yesterday

ps. If anyones got any advice on the little issues please suggest

    Love the wood grain

Temp gauge is an easy fix. New sensor from VAGparts, 45seconds with an adjustable spanner and you are good as done.

iirc adjusting the doors can be a major PITA. I'll see if I can dig up the post I found about them.

Does look in good nic though! When's the 3 spoke coming?

Probably the Abs switch if the dash bulbs work, do they go out when driving? I'll have a look might have a couple of spare abs switches.

The coolant temp guage, check the plug on the bottom of the rad as that might need changing or the plugs come off.

The dash bulbs are easy to change just take the switches out and the front comes off to reveal the bulbs, I've done mine been meaning to go pick up some more brighter bulbs (btw I used the 1.1 v one's as they shined that little bit brighter and better)

Doors if u take the top bolt out on the hinge there is an allen head bolt to adjust behind it you don't need much adjustment tho, also helps if someone holds the door as well to take the strain.

Glad to see you like the airbox, good mod I went the opposite route with the cone filter which was mental sounding.

Get a stainless exhaust and you will fall in love with the noise you get.

I may be wrong as I'm more familar with the v6 but isn't the sensor on the bottom of the rad the temp switch for the rad fans? iirc that doesn't effect your temp gauge at all, the temp gauge is a separate sensor that sits on the coolant lines in the rear bulkhead (at least on the v6).

          This should help:

          Erratic Coolant Temperature Gauge
          (Pablo Carselle)
Symptoms: Coolant temperature gauge is erratic or non-functional; possibly no heat from the climate control.
There are two possibilites. The first thing to check is the thermostat, because it's easier and cheaper. If that's not the problem, you may need to replace the multi-function temperature switch per instructions below.

Follow upper radiator hose to housing attached to block. On lower part of this housing there is a multi-function sensor with a rubber boot with 4 or 5 wires sticking out , and a bronze or copper colored hexagonal shape. It is threaded to housing (normal thread direction).
With engine cold or lukewarm: Run a small screwdriver carefully around the perimeter of the boot, between the boot and the sender body. The intent is to separate any stickiness. Push down the boot from the upper edge and work it down. (Do not pull down the wires).
There is a plug in connector inside with 3 or 4 contacts. The boot going down will disconnect the plug.
Prepare the replacement part next to you so that you don't have to walk away. Place absorbent towel or rag underneath the sender.
Using an open end wrench loosen sender and finish extraction by hand but maintaining slight upward pressure to avoid excessive coolant loss.
When sender completely loose, pull it out and plug opening with left hand index finger. Make sure you have the flat washer on the sensor you pulled. If it lodged into the hole, pry it out. The new one will leak with two on there.
With right hand (quickly without panic) insert new sender and initiate thread. Do not over-tighten with wrench (brass threads).
Reconnect plug redress boot and clean the coolant from the block etc. If you broke the tabs, don't worry, just about every replaced sensor has broken tabs.
Warm up engine check for leaks and enjoy your new temp reading and ECU performance.

Check out 20v.org as its a goldmine of info for that model.

            Yeah the wood is going

The trims are coming out - i'm going to spray them satin black.
Are they glued in or clipped?

The interior needs a good shampoo but wear isn't an issue
I'll have a look at the door when i've got a helper i think - i remember how heavy they are

Definately after a 3 spoke to replace that bus wheel in there now
what can i expect to payand how regularly do they pop up second hand?

Lol so you got wood then

They are clipped in or at least mine was, quite easy to spray as well. Fit a set of escort recaro's in as your front seats

Steering wheel, iirc Jas11n or spink has one for sale at present, it was commented on in one of the other posts.

i use the word "wood" figuratively

Its some ***** school desk veneer
Is it best to just lever them off do you think?

I'll have a search about the wheel

The handbrake is up quite high, could be a sign the rear calipers are starting to seize at the handbrake mechanism?

Wots it like on hill stops, on the handbrake only?

Handbrakes not great to be honest - got one new caliper, the other doesn't look too clever

I'm changing the disks and pads in a couple weeks, whats the best way to tell if the caliper / cable is knackered? the calipers are only £50 odd from brakeparts if need be

can't say i noticed what manifold when checking it over, its an early 1990 so i'm guessing it has. He should be mint when i've tidied up a few scruffy bits.

I'm thinking about poly bushing the front arms - steering feels quite vague and sloppy.
Also, do the S2 and V6 strut braces bolt straight on?
                          What about the front ARB?

Front ARB not sure, there should be threads on that and since most people uprate them probably spares.

Audi was a bit hit and miss about what they put the tubular manifold on, hopefully you have it if not should not be hard to get hold of (once picked a complete one up for £15 quid )

The s2 has welded in mounts for the strut brace but IIRC you can get something like it from the likes of demon tweeks.

If the front feels sloppy another place to check is the two bolts on the steering rack just behind the sort of area the dizzy is in, my 20v coupe one's was loose so at speed the car had random lane change
Easy fix tho if you have the right size spanner/socket.

Thanks - i'll check the rack. its had new ball joints a year or so ago, so i;m guessing bushes and alighnment is a good start Still, handles real nice with the set-up its got.
Just think it could be a bit sharper

Getting a mount welded is no problem, but i'll check for bolt-ons.
An RS2 ARB sounds fun, but will it fit i wonder?
