    Disappointing rolling road results

Having had a remap, I decided to check the car over and did a rolling road on Saturday before Combe track day and was rather disappointed by the results . 273bhp and 288ftlbs was not in itself a bad thing but the AFRs were far too low and nearly off the scale of the machine at 10:1 for much of the rev range.

The other thing that I was a little worried by was the dip in the torque curve. This can be felt on the road and makes the originally smooth S2 a little peaky with a flat spot. The torque curve agrees with Brian Smith's car which also has the same map. Also, the torque dip coincides with the boost gauge fluctuating before settling, there's an audible change in the turbo note at the same point too. It's not a boost leak, I've checked. Very strange

On the track the car felt flat coming out of a couple of corners due to the revs being in the region of the torque dent and then hit 4500rpm and started to fly again.

One explaination for the rich running was that the DV was damaged as it is now knackered after a session on the track but this was after 10 laps of Combe at full throttle. As a result I have no idea of it's condition on the rollers but the fact that it subsequently broke isn't exactly too encouraging. If it was leaking then there would be a boost leak into the low pressure side... Sounded like an S1 going round the track though so all quite amusing really, hope there's no damage to the turbo through poor operation.

I've borrowed a DV from a mate and the car seems to fly this evening but the boost dent is still there, as is the flutterring boost gauge...

Finally, fuel ineficiency is quite bad now too! I'm getting aboslutely rubbish mpg on a cruise, I wonder if it's related to the rich running on the rollers and possibly DV? Have to see if it improves with a new DV.

Overal then, not a great weekend but the track session was great fun!

Seeing you and your mate in his scirocco racing was ammusing, I know how annoying the dv would have been but the s1 style noise was lovely but wierd how it echoed thru the airbox and confused us a bit when you first came back.

Have you emailed/faxed a copy of the printout over to them?

My airbox is a little modified and so it makes much more noise than a standard one as a result - linky

Have some videos courtesy of my Mum from the edge of the track. Sounds great!

Scirocco track car is always good fun but the standard suspension has to go, it was scary ! Have the onboard footage from my car following it and it's all over the place! With the remap the S2 fleeced it down the straights (before the remap it neck-a-neck!) and was easily a match in the corners, even on my standard springs!

        Andy,

I don't think that torque curve looks right either.

FYI please see below the plots for my ABY on an AMD Remap actually recorded on AMD's rolling road a couple of years ago....

        Cheers,

        Steve.

(Excuse the poor quality, I had to photograph them as I no longer have a scanner.... )

Is that to make up for the hole in your torque curve!

Actually it's all down to my modified airbox, there's a mouse living in there nibbling away at the air as it goes by... the effect is lessened at high revs!

it will be a leak to cause the afr to go like that.

Well the DV started chatterring after a track session so could be that. Will do another boost check but no problems with the overboost protecion for some time so large external leak is unlikely.

Replaced the DV and the torque curve still feels like it has that dent in it, the car feels like it really picks up after 4.5k when doing a full bore run in 4th from 2k but is a little jerky 3.5k to 4.5k, I'm sure there's a little part of me that is looking for it but it is there nonetheless. There is also an audible change in turbo note between 3.5k and 4.5k.

@Doug, have you got a boost profile for the map that you can PM me please so that I can check it against the boost gauge. Seems to hit 1.2 - 1.3 bar at about 3k then it fluctuates like crazy between 1 and 1.3 before settling at 4.5k and then holds 1 bar to 7k before dropping to 0.7.

I've compared the results with the standard map from Weston:

Geez It's not happy between 3.5-4.5k be interesting to see the new AFR between that range with the new DV.

Andy, have you got an air/fuel ratio reading between 3.5 and 5k?
Does the boost drop off/flutter between these revs?
If the boost is normal it could need a slight tweak on the fuel map if it's running lean or rich- what are the plugs looking like? are they the right heat range for the modded motor-I've had weird symptoms before on turbo cars and gone up a heat grade on the plugs and cured it!!
If it always has a "hole" at these revs on the road it is "usually"(NOT always!) mapping- leaner mixture for cruising economy. But if the AFR is spot in this rev band then it's obviously not!
This is one of those annoying cases of checking everything on the boost side(hoses expanding?) before looking at the electronics side.
Good luck, i know how much hassle it is to find these sort of faults-let us know how you get on
