I deliberately found a right scruffy dog of a car, truly rank inside and out as I wanted a new all hands on deck project.

Now get that boat hull front bumper pulled off and an S2 front bumper on it, along with 80 V6/cabby/coupe headlamps like I have.
And I've got a set of 16" avus to go on "without" doing a five stud hub swap

    Seriously though, looks nice
    Cheers Jas!

I like the front bumper, it is more aerodynamic and it just "slips" through the air!

It won't be getting any modifications, I just want to get it "right" and drive it. It really is only a getting to work and back car. I do 80 miles a day and am aiming for 600 miles from a tank...

Nearly, I had been considering selling the Golf for a while, once I did the Maths it was a no brainer.

This car is "earning" me £200 a month over the Golf 16v!

      Cheers,

      Steve.

Yeah mate, just pulling your leg. I've bought mine as a work hack too. Already pulled 347 miles from just under half a tank, so 600 miles is easy, waaay easy.
I'm just adding a few things as I go, cos it's a complete dog looks wise, though mechanically is sound as a pound. Really has suprised me how smooth and comfortable they are. As my mate Paulgo said, you kinda feel like superman without his suit, but getting back in the S2 just makes it feels like a bloody supercar. So true.

I'd show you a pic of the interior as I got it, but don't want to invade your thread and you'd more than likely feel sick. I found some bogey's on the doorcard

Again, looks a belter and it WILL save you money on the work run

You'll get 600 miles out of it if you nail it everywhere!! You'll easily see 700 and my PB is 749 before I bottled it, and when I tanked up (to see what was left) I was still 8 litres short.. could have done nearly 100 miles more on 8 litres!

I did the entire Scumball last year on 2.5 tanks with the car fully loaded with stuff and 2 people/3 at times. One of the other guys in a Chevy Caprice cop car spent £1400 on fuel alone!!

                      Now that would be telling!

Seriously, its really easy! I spray degreaser (Auto Glym Machine Cleaner is good) into the door shuts and leave for 5 - 10 minutes. Then get a bowl of hot water and plenty of washing up liquid. You will also need a thin wheel brush, a washing up type brush and a toothbrush. Use the brushes to agitate the dirt and grease (the hinge grease is the hardest). Then use and old cloth to clean up behind the brushes. I reckon it took me about 20 - 30 mins to do all four doors and the boot....

                      Cheers,

                      Steve.

Good move Steve, i bought a dag dag about 8 mnth's ago and it's been a good investment really, save a fortune on fuel and like Jas said it makes you appreciate the S2 even more.

an excellent purchase sir, in the best colour!! im in the oposite boat, i already have a "dag dag" and want an s2 avant for fun!! 600miles to a tank should be easy enough, my personal best was 740 to a full tank, i reckon she had about 30 miles left, but didnt want to risk it!!

my thoughts would be to buy a uprated panel filter, and some of that Dielectric Grease for the afm (smooths out throttle responce, alloys me to drive the car as low as 500rpm without stalling!! )

Oh and i`d also be interested in where your getting these avus wheels in 4x108!

In an effort to sway you towards s2 bumper on a white dag dag....
Time waits for no man. Unless that man is Chuck Norris.

Cheers Ryan, now that's a very good looking Dag dag you have there!

I am going to be doing some more jobs this weekend, in no particular order:

                            Dash lightbulbs
Heater control knob does not go around to "Face" position
                            Straighten steering wheel
Aerial on stereo does not work
Leather gearlever gaiter to be fitted
Quick machine polish, Carlack Nano sealant and Collinite 476 Wax
                            Rain X on all windows

That should do it for Saturday....

                            Cheers,

In all seriousness - these 80 TDi machines are getting harder to find for sale - especially so on this island. Maybe its a time of year thing... I passed by 6 or 7 last Autumn when I started looking and figured there was plenty to choose from so didn't sweat it. In the last few weeks I've only seen one or two worth a real look on Autotrader and they were both a big distance from me.

I was looking at a really tidy A4 1.9 TDi quattro today at lunch on line - 1996 I think it was with leather & aircon - very clean and well kept example going for £1750. It had about 6 photos and after viewing number 3 I was unable to go further. Refreshed the search thinking my browser had burped and th car was gone. The advert had obviously just expired.

Also cannot find a 1.9TDi Polo circa 1997 - missed one of those last month and aint seen one for sale here since.

Just need to get some old dagger so I'm not stressed about upcoming work on the S2 that gets delayed with unexpected parts or life getting in the way.

Tell me about it. I could only find 9 '80 Tdi nationally on Autotrader. There are always a few on ebay but scattered all over the country again and some of dubious quality. I think I got a little lucky with mine, sure it has some niggles, mostly down to previous owners "putting up with them" rather than fixing anything, and I did pay more than I wanted to, but mechanically it seems really solid and is returning 48 - 52 mpg when driven at 70 mph. It is quiet and solid and pootles along at 2300 rpm in top when cruising.

With petrol prices as they are, I think solid old diesels like these have bottomed out in price and will hold their value. The petrol versions are ten a penny and hardly make £800 now.

I am now looking forward to detailing it and making it "mine"
