Andy i thought of the original airbox but it takes up too much room i think hks/apexi would work better behind the headlight, also a heatshield too
Anybody use hks style cone filters?

If the airbox was a major restriction then we'd hear stories of highly tuned RS2s running cone filters and people waxing lyrical about how much better their car runs... can't remember anything like that myself, infact I'd have said that usually the opposite is true FWIR.Cheers'en, AndyC

Absolutely true. Cone filters, unless extremely well sealed from heat sources will cause a net power loss on cars producing less than 600-700hp. Note that Audi installed heat shields on the outside of the sealed airbox. Engineers know the detrimental effects of hot intake air. Hot air means less moles of oxygene as per the ideal gas law: PV=nRT and hot air means a less aggressive ignition curve as well as a greater risk of detonation, pre ignition, melted pistons, bent rods and whatnot. If the airbox was a major restriction then we'd hear stories of highly tuned RS2s running cone filters and people waxing lyrical about how much better their car runs... can't remember anything like that myself, infact I'd have said that usually the opposite is true FWIR.
If the air was moving so fast that it could not pick up heat, it would neither be able to shed heat to the intercooler.
Some reading from Kenne Bell (one of the very top V8 tuners):
http://www.kennebell.net/techinfo/ge...AirWARNING.pdf
The S6+ of a friend of mine was tuned at one of the top Audi tuners in Norway. In usual fashion they installed a useless cone filter. We threw it in the recycling bin, installed stock airbox and stock paper filter and gained 5-20hp across the entire rev range. (see attached power/torque graphs)
The open filter probably wasted more power than the car gained from the race exhaust and chip. The logs were generated on the road on a 9c evening, so the usual excuses about cone filters only suffering on a RR do not apply here. Intake temp with the cone filter was in the 30-40c range, with airbox it dropped to a few degs above ambient. Even larger losses on a turbo car due to the hotter exhaust. My RS2 came with a cone with heatshield and I measured 40-60c on the filter surface on a 14c day. Installed stock RS2 box with stock paper filter and had a massive gain. Currently approx 400hp at the wheels. BTW, Mihnea runs stock S4 airbox with stock paper filter in his 520+ hp S4.
S6+ graphs with cone filter vs stock filter:
Graph 1 shows power gain with stock airbox/paper filter over cone filter on 1997 S6+.
Graph 2 shows torque gains with stock setup vs cone
Graph 3 shows 3 consecutive runs with stock airbox. Results are very consistent
Claimed power at the flywheel is 380-400hp.1995 RS2 on Alcohol (6.8sec 100-200km/h)

i see your point andy but highly tunes RS2's run what 380hp.
not a lot of hp that really. thats stage 0.5 where i come from.
in all seriousness if you use a maf then maybe the airbox isn't as restrictive. if you dont use a maf then its restrictive and usually if you dont use a maf the turbo is a lot bigger than RS2.
the ITG one sounds similar to mine except mine is green/blue.
ive used both on supercharged and turbocharged. the G60 doesnb't use a MAF. cone still performs better when running high boost (18psi) on standard and lower 8-12psi the airbox wins. its about flow limits as you will be aware.
G60 chargers used to turn inside out almost a cone filter that was too small or a little weak. the flow limit of the filter.Comment

nip is running an RS2 turbo
I agree that for BIG turbos the airbox becomes a bit small perhaps, more than likely it can't be packaged properly so you have no choice. In this case though the other restrictions in the inlet will be massaged out.Cheers'en, AndyC

When you run a cone filter you need a decent heatshield & air feed.. its not rocket science, just common sense. When properly implemented a good free flow filter will easily out perform an airbox... its making it happen in a IL5 engine bay that is the toss up.Panthero Coupé quattro 20vt

I ran a apexi cone on my s2 for about a year. Apart from the extra induction noise it did very little. After I swapped to an rs2 box the diffence was amazing. I'm using the rs2 airbox with oem filter in both my s2 and rs2. They are imo better then a cone even when used with good shealds and a cold air feed.91 S2 coupé - RIP

best compromise i found was rs2 airbox with KN filter+ bring as much air possible in there from anywhere possible. Thus i have incorporated tubes that bring air from the lower right vent directly into the airbox,as well as modified the underlight headlamp trim to bring air from there directly to the airbox.I think it makes a difference.
in the future with a bigger turbo and exhaust manifold,i will definitelly make a cover for any cone filter that i will use,as well as cover that with antiheat insulation.Otherwise there are losses..Comment
