    Turbo Identification

I posted this up in my project thread but though it deserved its own topic.

The story goes that i have 3 supposed RS2 turbo's in my hands.

Turbo A) Used RS2 turbo with cracked hotside, also used RS2 EM, cracked. Should probably sell.
Turbo B) AET refurbished original RS2 turbo, unused since refurb.
Turbo C) AET refurbished RS2 hybrid turbo with 360 bearing, unused since refurb.

Turbo B is good, but doesnt have the 360 bearing as with Turbo C. However, upon receiving Turbo B, Turbo C doesnt appear to share any of the same parts, despite being sold to me as a reconditioned RS2 turbo.

Pics below, if people can tell me what turbo B is that would be great. I can post part numbers if that helps.

Andy what is a RS2 Hybrid , is it possibly just an RS2 unit with a 360 bearing ?, I always thought the majority of hybrids were small hybrids comprising of a specific config of k24/26 components.

FWIW I've got 5324.980.7200 on mine

I was told it was a reconditioned RS2 with 360 bearing, however all 3 key parts, the centre housing, cold and hotsides have different part numbers and are visibly different to the real RS2 turbo - so it cant be a reconditioned RS2 unit.

The part numbers on the 2 real RS2 turbo's all match up, its just the rebuilt thing with the 360 bearing that i need figure out.

Is it just a plain k24 or possibly a k26 hybrid Looks smaller than the RS2 item.

          Andy,

To make things a bit clearer list the coldside, centre housing, and hotside numbers.

Also make a quick measurement across the inlet, check they are the same. The hybrid does look a little smaller but i think that's the picture.

Good idea Ross, will get part numbers and measurements of all 3.

Just need to get a pair of those slidey digital measurement things.

As for getting an RS2 turbo, take it from me, its difficult to get hold of a good one

They tend to come in 3 formats - used/damaged, reconditioned, brand new.

For a used one, which is probably cracked, your looking at around £400.
For a reconditioned one about £600, more with a 360 bearing.
For a brand new one anything from £800-£1500.

I have a proper RS2 turbo here in a box from a trusted source - so we can use that as a reference if you wish. I'm certain there was a couple of RS2 turbo variants from factory (family album lists two depending on VIN) though I don't for life of me know why.

                  Cheers Sonic.

I assume other people use hybrids then. Is there a general consensus as to the general size? For example a garrett T4 or anything?

Might be useful to measure the outlet diameter of the turbine housings as well. Think we have established before that most of a genuine RS2 turbo is unique other than the centre section/bearings etc. The turbine housing might indicate whether a genuine RS2 shaft has been used.
The turbos with the 5160 p/n have the correct comp housing for the RS2. It might be an optical illusion but one looks to have a larger inlet ID larger than the other although that might be because one is cleaner than the other.
If you really want to know the spec of the compressor wheel on the other one then you would neen to take the housing off and try and get some measurements of the major/minor diameter of the comp wheel. At least that would tell you from what family it was sourced. Again the ID of the turbine outlet might give a clue to what shaft has been used.
A new replacement RS2 turbine housing would be expensive. They were £400ish years ago. That alone might help you come to a decision. Would certaintly be worth trying to find a price out for a replacement. Unless there is a material difference it might be possible to machine a housing from another K26 to suit but I haven't had the opportunity to verify that.

Thought you might be able to add to this Robin

To give Andy some piece of mind, can someone verify what i told him last night:

Remove the 6 nuts, and the metal retaining things
                      carefully separate the housing
Measure the diameter at each end of the turbine
Process should be the same for both the hotside and colside housing

..and all importantly, no other bits will fall off, spring out etc!

                      Cheers

                        Correct!
Although it is worthwhile to make some alignment marks to aid re-assembly. Of course this is easier on a shiney one that has been apart recently than one that has never been disassembled!
There is always the possibilty of damage, especially with the comp housing/wheel as that is a close fit and means the comp housing must me pulled off without cocking the comp housing. In practice this is quite difficult. Its also possible to nip the O ring during reassembly.
I would say that with some reasonably accurate measurements and referencing of whatever numbers we can find, should allow identification. For example there are some pics of the different numbers on the turbine housing in the "naked" thread.
I would doubt that somebody would in effect hybridize a genuine RS2. They might make a hybrid using the RS2 Compressor side with another turbine/housing wheel, thats why measuring the turbine as I have suggested may provide the answer.

Come on Andy. Get your spanners out and measure the inducer and exducer on all the wheels.

So would i and an army of folk. They are only going to get more expensive as the parts to refurb them go NLA and the stock of new ones runs down.

                              So... pics and measurements:

Turbo B) AET refurbished original RS2 turbo, unused since refurb.

                              Hot side (54.26mm)

                              Cold side (48.52mm)

                              Cold side outlet (40.3mm)

                              Cold side housing off (66.01mm)

                              Cold side housing

Turbo C) AET refurbished RS2 hybrid turbo with 360 bearing, unused since refurb.

                              Hot side (50.26mm)

                              Cold side (46.93mm)

                              Cold side outlet (40.92mm)

                              Cold side housing off (65.44mm)

                              Cold side housing

                              So...

Hybrid hot side inlet is 4mm smaller
Hybrid cold side inlet 1.59mm smaller
Hybrid cold side outlet is 0.62mm smaller
Hybrid wheel thing is 0.57mm smaller

And i can confirm that neither cold side housings are inter-changeable. They both catch on each others wheel things.
