I thought the idea of progressive springs was that they got stiffer with increased load. That can only occur if the softest rate is uppermost as that will compress first.
What's the part number of these out of interest?
did'nt get any instructions as I got them off a guy that changed his plans so they were surplus,
      here is the part numbers,

          Sorry...

          not trying to offend...

The only conclusion to draw is; when you take the spring out look at each end, they are different...test fit to the strut and the top 'cup'...you will then notice the best fit.

'I thought the idea of progressive springs was that they got stiffer with increased load. That can only occur if the softest rate is uppermost as that will compress first.'

Is there a new rule of pyshics you know of...

So I think it is quite important to get then the right way round.
Besides which, no amount of looking at the spring ends will resolve the bigger issue that they are in all probability not H&R S2 Coupe springs. The colour is the first give away and the fact that they do not have the correct part number on them.

the guy I got them off could not remember which was front and rear, I phoned a h&r dealer and he said they were old springs and numbers now superseded

Hmm.. rather than get bogged down in theory.. I would call that bloke back and check that those part numbers correspond to the current part numbers. Its a possibility that they are Coupe quattro as they are red I believe, not S2 Coupe quattro which are usually blue. You can also verify the correct fitment of the coils.
The previous owner of my car fitted rear springs to the front and fronts to the rear! Result being a lower ride height at the front and a higher one at the rear than should have been the case. I'll let the suspension expert comment on the effect the different spring rates have.
Off the car without knowing different you would expect the coils that look stronger due to their thicker wire to go on the front. Unfortunately the shorter thicker coils are the rears and the taller thinner ones are the front!
I have to go now as the Mothership has landed.

So it looks like the 810 22 100 are Passat! That just leaves the 055's to indentify.

Odd, I have also seen the 55s listed as Sedan Rears

                      Good link!
Looks like they are Type 85Q all round.
                      VA 810 22 100 front
                      HA 810 22 055 rear.
Clearly where other vechicles share components then there is compatability. I also checked the Passat fitment!

yep thats what they are, spoke to a very helpful man at h&r uk today he confirmed this and said they are not the correct rating for the s2, so it looks like the standard ones are coming back out to play for now while this gets sorted , with regards to the springs being upside down he said that the writing on the springs goes the correct way up this dictates which way up the spring sits.
Thanks for the heads up on this guys

Oh well! Better to find out now I guess. Hope you understand that my observations were only intended to prevent potential problems. Something didn't look right!
Hopefully your next set of springs will be correct. Unfortunately you have to do your homework first as these days you can't trust anyone.
On the spring orientation issue, despite what Mr H&R said, how does he explain the pic below? The blue is the S2 coupe spring and the yellow the S2 avant. Surely they should be fitted te same way up, unless of course avant owners do indeed have different laws of physics applying to them!

totaly agree better to find out now rather than when its on the road or in a ditch, any comments are most welcome and appreciated especially as this is the first s2 I have owned and its a lot to take in.
The springs were originally sourced for an s2 so this is being looked into and hopefully resolved, and your pic well that throws everything out the window
