Best upgrade for a mk2 is a 1.8T engine and some GOOD QUALITY coilovers

I'd agree with tom looking at his GTI. My brother might have his MINT 16v for sale if you'd have a 16v. 2.0 conversion etc. I'll try to find pics or get him to log on with my details.

I could rant on all day about MK2's ive currently got a rare early 3dr 16v in White. But have had a catalogue of modified 8v's. Although my 16v is faster i still prefer driving 8v's
I too like my 16v to look fairly stock. If you dont want to lower the car too much but want much improved handling. I couldnt recommend more Eibach springs (25-30mm lowering) with OEM replacement Gas (must be gas) shocks (£25 per corner from ECP). If you want to go lower than that then go for Weitec Coilovers, they are very cheap at the moment (under £400), and feature a chunky ACME adjustment thread which doesnt gunk up as easily as most other coilovers on the market.
Personally i havent bothered with big brake upgrades on my MK2's i find braided hoses, uprated pads and good quality discs are good enough even for track days and nurburgring.
My 16v has a 2.0 audi block in and runs 170bhp, and the original early 8v (239mm) front brakes are fine with Ferodo DS2500 pads and EBC Premium Discs.
MK4 golf calipers can be fitted to the rear using Goodridge adapter hoses and dont seize.
If you want for more performance but staying 8v, a 3a block from an audi 80/coupe will drop straight in, combine that with a good cam, Port and Polish big valves, airfilter/cone, TSR/Milltek exhaust manifold, And it wont be shy of 150bhp.
16v exhausts are larger diameter than 8v and as good as any performance alternative, if you want stainless then i can personally recommend Jetex.
I prefer having no Power steering on my 16v, my last 8v had power steering and i didnt like it, it removed the go-kart feel of driving the car, but that is a personal preference i guess.

As everyone else has said, wat ever mk2 you get make sure you get a decent set of coilovers and get some uprated ARBs and or strut braces!

Ok I know its not a mk2 but we just bought this for my lad last night, 65k miles, FSH for £1300, I think its ok drives and brakes well in a staight line etc, only prob is a weep from the steering rack on the nearside.. How much is that going to cost to fix?

Yep, can't go far wrong with the OEM rep Bilsteins I've had these on a couple of Mk II Golf GTi's and they perform very well, what's more their very inexpensive from places like GSF and ECP. I had Eibach springs on my Corrado G60 and a Golf, they were spot on, wish they did a set for the S2 Coupé.

This is my new baby... 3 Dr in Red.... Needs a decent Respray... Looks good till you look closely.. Been quoted about a Grand for both sides, skutle & bonnet inc sorting out all the dings etc...







This is one I could not resist on fleabay.... had to have it as it was a bargain & she had been neglected for couple of years... Gonna get her sorted and back into tip top shape and sell her on to some one who may look after her!!

the wings are still available from the dealer at about £75. ALL NON OEM wings dont fit. I bought genuine and it was dead easy to fit, needed no modding or adjusting. Worth the extra money as non gen is about 45 quid.

Dubforce is a good source of parts for these things and my bro tells me E38 too (watch out for the massive egos)

All i have left is a gen Gti front grille 4lamp
