Dean sounds like it is the hall sender, i suspect that when its not running you have no spark. It is fuelling as the crankshaft sender in the gearbox bellhousing is working. Not sure if its possible to fit a new one without removing the camshaft sproket. Most cars this has to be taken off to allow access.

Yep, the cam sprocket needs to come off to get at it.
Check with Martyn at VAGparts or your local stealer. Part number is 034 905 161. Go get one tomorrow. They may have it in stock. Sure you can get it fitted for this weekend.

Aux rad moved out of the way. Aux. belts off, top cam belt cover off, set engine on TDC. Undo the cam pulley bolt and pull off the pulley. Change hall sender and refit in reverse order.

Good point, once running it wont die unless you switch it off. If you get the new part bring it along with you. Myself or someone else will fit it for you. Or just watch and laugh at you trying

Tried to start the car again this morning, guess what, would not start This is still the hall sensor, right? Is it just an intemitent fault or should it start when cold If i can get a sensor i might have to come to Billing on an AA truck
On some of your pictures of the powder coated parts, you had the connector sticking up/mounted wrong - have you tried wiggling it in case it has been damaged? It is the one at the front of the inlet manifold beside the small vacuum hose.
When my sensor went, it occasionally wouldn't start when warm, then got gradually worse over 2 weeks and would occasionally not start when cold.
Had a new hall sender fitted on Wednesday, fine, the car started....I have a running issue which possibly may be the cam timing out, however that is another problem...
At the moment i am back to square one; this morning the car would not start again but when i got home tonight the car started again, and did so numerous times, so i ask what an earth is going on Am i correct in thinking its not the HS now? I suppose i should check and see if i am getting a spark, but then is there any point; If the car decides its going to start it will spark, if its not then it won't
How do you know the wiring to the hall sensor is OK - maybe a fault on that which made the car appear to have a faulty sender in the first place. Pull fault codes 1st off.
Also - if the cam timing is far enough out you may be getting a nonsense signal from the hall sender which the isn't happy with.
Could also be something unrelated on the alarm or immo wiring.
