Its pretty simple really, replace factory feed with section of plastic pipe 5x the size and add another.

Here are a few photos of the airbox on the car, pretty simple really but it must help things seeing as the factory feed is so small!
The car was run on the rolling road with just the feed in the location of the factory one (PD130 intake pipe with small lines) then last week I added the extra bit of ducting.

Cutting the front off? If I'm reading this correctly the air would no longer be coming from behind the headlight area but the engine bay. For the photos I removed the air deflector thing which comes out to get to the headlight bulbs but this keeps the hot air out!
There is a little bit of induction noise, the car wasn't that loud with a cone filter anyway but there is about 60% of the whistle that I had with the cone and not a lot of the 'roar'
Going from the distinct dirt mark that you get on the paper air filters, It doesn't look like the air gets much of a choice where it goes so doubt smoothing the box will help - any gains from this sort of thing will be minimal on these engines anyway.
