Anyone with a 1.8T 20v engine will probably be aware of the sludge/contaminate issue in the sump, causing the gauze in the oil pickup tube to block up? No? you should be.
This can lead to low oil pressure to the top of the engine, increased wear and ultimately, failure..........big style.

Whilst I'd not experienced any problems, that little voice was nagging away at me. So, had the car into local specialists to get this issue checked and they found this;

It's been one of the first jobs I've done on our 1.8Ts, or got Tom C to do anyway, and I've insisted friends do the same when they've got 1.8Ts.
Our S3 was fine, but the A3 was pretty bad even though it was only 2 years old when we got it. The crap in the strainer was mostly bits of gasket in out case, there from new I would guess.
As you know, it's worth looking just for peace of mind. 8L sumps seem to be a service item luckily, so it gives a good chance to take a regular peek.

Probably the last update for a while at least. Managed to get these done yesterday before going and collecting my little family from hospital.

I managed to change four nappies, bath little Charlotte AND wash both the RS4 and the A4 today
I blame my job, I spend all day flying around like a turbocharged V10 R8, so it must rub off at home.

I do manage to get outside in the spring and summer, but you can forget cars in the winter. Weekends are tied up doing family things!
