  • Dark thoughts about the S2's originality...

... Our S2 Estate is pretty much original, it's a nice car, a very nice car... But...

Bits and bobs are starting to show their age, nothing major, but I'm starting to think I might start 'altering' it; after all, bits only screw on or off like the Rally Car.

These thoughts started with the long defunct Air Con, which, by rights, I could ditch, and then there's the plethora of thin plastic air ducting under the bonnet which I'm sure, due to it's very fragile nature, could go without issue.

Then there's the speed sensor mod for the diff lock, that I'd love to do, but it's moving away from original again...

So, basically, do I persevere with trying to keep it original or throw caution to the wind?:mischeif:

    originality ~?~

my view on this subject matter as with any car i have previously owned is to keep all original parts that are removed/upgraded then if needs be it can all be reversed. with regards to the diff lock mod it is only cutting a wire and can be done and reversed in minutes

Just go for it, however do it carefully, ie you could remove the pin from the diff lock plug rather than just cut the wire. Put all the original bits in a box so they can sit in the garage forever

As long as you stick with screw on/off bits its a none issue anyway as you could return it to original at any point.

Ha ha! I started off with the intention of trying to keep it very "stock". Although in reality when I bought it, it had some nice upgrades already, Remap, BBS wheels, Bilstein dampers. I continued to try and keep it stock by replacing worn wishbone bushes with OEM rubber ones etc. Then 10,000 miles later doing I was replacing them again.

I am now more of an OEM+ kind of guy, and even now considering other subtle mods. (Nothing you could not undo mind you).

Over the last couple of years I fitted Powerflex diff mount, poly subframe bushes, poly wishbone bushes, new OEM Engine and GB mounts. All of those are fit and forget and the car drives like new if not better. I will never have to replace again the poly bushes with the mileage I do.

Plus, those types of upgrades with not devalue the car. It the personal, not revesible stuff that *could* hurt the value of the car.

At the end of the day it's your car do what you want. I doubt they are ever going to reach Cossie or Mk1 Escort money anyway....

          Cheers,

A 3076 stroker seems to fit the term 'sensible'... if you're Scandinavian
