my latest catch of the week!

i recently met a guy who had claimed to have had a real UR coupe quattro sitting in a warehouse that is pretty much out in the middle of nowhere. i kind of figured he had a coupe GT and was mistaking it for a quattro just because of audi's claim to fame with quattro. anyhow i got curious and took a ride in the old 4000 quattro to go see if this was indeed real deal or not. when i got there to my suprise it was indeed a real 1983 coupe quattro! turns out he bought the car at random with hope of someday restoring it back to its former glory but he came to the grim realization that he would never get to even turn a bolt on it as he is up there in age and has many other project cars in front of this car. i offered to buy the car from him but he declined the sale as he said he wanted it to stay within his family. after he made a trip to my garage to see my VW/audi collection along with the quality of my work he retracted his decision about keeping the car in the family as he told that his kids would just pawn the car off and never do anything with it anyhow. so after weeks of talking about the car he showed up at my place with the car on a trailer, walks up to me and tells me its my lucky day. hands me a big folder and a set off keys and tells me merry christmas. The guy gave me the UR coupe quattro free and clear as long as i promised to restore the back to its original color and make it as perfect as the day it came off of the assembly line. obviously i agreed and that was all she wrote, i was the proud owner of a 1983 audi UR coupe quattro.

The car itself is pretty rough and needs a bit of body work but the floors and such are over all pretty solid. The car was originally helios blue according to the VIN number but some idiot painted the car white very poorly might i add. the engine has not ran in 13 years, i tried to get it running again but it will not fire on its own, i put new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, drained all the old gas and put fresh 93 in the tank, a new fuel pump but it wont fire in its own. if i spray starting fluid in it the car will sputter but thats all i get out of it. i am now considering an AAN swap into the car as the old CIS turbo powered engine is really out of date plus its impossible to find parts for in the USA. anyhow here's some pics of my catch.

The car came with all of the documentation as well!

This was the most shocking thing to find! i never knew a parts catalog like this existed!

This a post card i found in the parts catalog that looks like it may have came from the audi museum in germany!

    Very nice gift.
I hope you have deep pockets as it will cost you a bomb to restore but worth every penny (cent)

Damb those US bumeprs are ugly! I'm hoping that we will see a nice resto thread then, with UR bumpers?

Would be nice to see it fully restored in US spec as nature intended, so to speak, bet it will look very good when done with the original blue as well.

Always liked the look of the early quattros.

Wish I was given one! Although I did own one many moons ago a 1985 'C' Reg which I put the number plate C10 VWR on, wonder where it is now!

Good luck with the resto, keep us updated

I think if you a going to the effort of a fairly major restoration, I'd resurrect the 10vT engine. In the future, it will markedly increase its desirability.

Nice car but what is it with American laws and bloody awful bumpers.
I mean i understand it to protect pedestrians but what real difference does it make?

I agree with Ian. The 10v T would be the way I would try to go.

Just shows you what clean living and a garage full of Audis can lead to. Good for you. If it were me I would get it back in to proper condition ASAP and take the previous owner for a ride. Who knows what else he has stashed away that needs a good home.

Thanks everyone for the support! its going to be a long process and i have a great group of friends/enthusiast's that are all into helping out however they can with the restoration. i actually got the car to kind of run today too, i narrowed it down to the fuel distributor being messed up. for now its going to go sleep in the back corner of my shop as i have too many other projects/builds going on to even open the UR's can of worms. im working on getting my AAN powered 4000 quattro back up and running, im working swapping all of the engine and driveline from a 97 M3 into an 89 325i, i have a URS6 avant and a URS4 torn down awaiting parts to come in too. i guessl i'll be good and busy into winter time here. wish me luck lol.

The bumpers had nothing to do with pedestrians. It was to limit the damage to a certain dollar amount, e.g. $800 (or whatever it was in 1983), in a 5 mph "bump" into an immovable object (or the car in front's rear bumper). Hence, the bumpers were typically designed to move inwards on hydraulic shocks, with travel limited to protecting the grill and/or A/C condenser/radiator, etc.
