Project '93 - That Euro Thing

About time I started a build thread, so here goes!

    1993 Coupe 16v
Currently on 60mm shocks and springs and nasty alloys courtesy of the last owner.

So, the first job I had was with the engine, which is finally sorted and running like a dream (replacement motronic head, lambda, throttle sensor, the list goes on!).

Also gave it a full service and changed the belt, and it's had a new ball joint.

Now it was running somewhere near what I wanted I set about replacing anything tasteless. The first victim was the huge oval DTM backbox it had been lumbered with at some point in its life. Yesterday I made a trip to Custom Pipes in Donny and got a new twin round backbox fitted to the existing Longlife catback. It's not too loud, but a bit deeper than stock. Looks nice and sounds acceptable! I'm a bit OCD and I think it needs tweaking position-wise... Am I right or does it look ok?! And yes, those silly stickers in the rear windows are going!

Also with a car of this age as we all know there are parts that become worn, and not all owners have the enthusiasm to get their hand in their pocket and get things put right. Luckily I'm not of the corner-cutting persuasion, so I have plans to replace the black exterior door moulds (that always come away from the clips on so many b3/b4 cars), as well as any bits along the way that are tired and would benefit a refurb or replacement.

My plans (hence the title) are to get it sitting a little more purposefully, and keep things 'period'. I'm not a fan of the current alloys, so soon they will be ditched in place of some lovely German things (all will be revealed) which measure 17 x 8.5 and 9.5. These will be fitted with a bit of stretched rubber to allow me to nail the low and wide 90s Euro look, and of course the arches will be dropped over the tyres with the help of some coilovers.

I'll be deleting the rear wiper (spoils the car in my opinion), and putting a badge where there should be one on the hatch.

The front is pretty plain at the minute, as you'd expect with the standard bumper. So I've picked up a V6 front that needs a couple of minor repairs, and I'll also be painting the chrome grille surround black. I've got a vague itch regarding fitting the B3 bonnet/lights/grill setup too - I personally think a V6 bumper on B3 cars is the nicest front end configuration.. but we'll see.

The interior is also on the list, it's in a lovely grey colour, which just aint cutting it. Plans are to replace all grey trim with black, including the dash, and find some black leather seats that are a bit different. I've got some ideas but I won't spill the beans just yet...! Oh, it already has the leather 3-spoke sport wheel, so that was a nice little bonus.

    Here are some pics...
Would love to hear your comments!

PS - also on the list are new numberplates without the nice rusty screws, and a couple of untidy bits of bodywork followed by a machine polish - I've given it a good dose of T-Cut and Autoglym this morning, and it's better that it was, but there's still room for improvement. Not bad for a 21 year old car though!

Should be nice when you're done. Seems to sit nicely as it is, shame there aren't more kits for the S2.

What coilovers are you going for? KW / FK?

Looks like a tidy car, nice to see it getting some love.
I agree with you, those wheels have to go. Tailpipes do look a touch off to the left, you can probably tweak that at the joint with the centre section.
        Any pics of the interior?

          Cheers guys :-)

Yeah it sits 'ok' at the minute, but it's nowhere near the stance I'm after. Hopefully picking up some KWs at some point soon.

The wheels I have on the way should really transform it!

No interior pics I'm afraid - it's the standard 16v spec cloth trim in light grey with matching grey dash and plastics.... mmmm, lovely ;-)

I don't mind the platinum interior, had it on my old V6q makes the interior very light & airy

That's true, it's actually a nice place to sit with the windows down, sunroof open and the sun shining in :-)

I've just got a thing for black leather, so I don't think the grey dash would work too well!

Interior's a long way off anyway, wheels and suspension is the current focus.

Also in the future I might consider an engine swap. It's not what I'd call quick, and I think with something a little torquier (is that a word?!) it would be a much nicer beast. I could drop in an ABF inlet cam and get some headwork done on the current 16v, but in reality that won't provide much more in the way of torque and I think that kind of money could be better spent. Even a 7a swap would be better. But a 10vt... now that would be nice, and a bit different.

I wouldn't bother with an N/A 5 banger, they sound great but not worth the hassle for such a small gain IMHO.
1.8T is the way to go

I know the 1.8T makes sense, but it's such a soulless engine :-( Unless of course it's got a K04 or bigger! Had an AGU in an A4 a few years ago, and it was quick enough with a map, but just a bit uninspiring. Maybe my views are tainted by the fact it only had a little K03!!

Having said that I went round Oulton in a BAM engined Octavia with anti-lag mapping, and that was a different animal altogether!!

Looking good, tailpipes are nice as is the stance of the car. I like red Audi's

Thanks mate :-) Stance will be tweaked once I've sorted the new rims, but it's not sitting badly for now. Should have a little update on the wheels in the coming week!

That would certainly keep things 'period', and I have given it some though. After reading up it seems the consensus is that doing a 1.8T swap would be easier, cheaper and more reliable. The yanks seem to be quite familiar with charging 4-pots, but I'm wondering whether those conversions were popular only before the 1.8T became so prolific across the VAG range.

I think whatever happens it'd be a costly affair - unless of course I found a very cheap lump and someone willing to do the swap for less than the inevitable fortune a garage would charge. I'd have a go myself, but space, skills and time are limited!

Look up bikerjim's project, as he fitted a 1.8T to his valver. Or just leave it with ~150bhp and accept that it's more about the looks. ATEOD, you'd be better off putting the money towards an S2 but then that's a little predictable perhaps.

1.8Ts are so plentiful & cheap its a no-brainer if its purely more grunt you're after. I agree though not the most exciting engine in the world.
A K04'd lump with a good map on it would be pretty rapid in your lighter FWD chassis. I would think you'd need an LSD to make the most of it!
