Yeah, my old PC had a cheaper AMD - this Pentium4 thing now has me wondering if I made a bit of a mistake? But surely it should still outperform, it is significantly higher quoted performance than my five year old "Time" computer?

Regarding monitors, I have a pretty good colour and contrast match with the flat panel, and gamma setting is easy with one of my image applications, but it still doesn't give the same quality as the CRT. I have a pic of a model wearing a wide brimmed hat that puts her face into a shadow. On the CRT, you can still see her face in good definition, but with the flat panel this is impossible without ruining the settings for the rest of the image. Unless you view the monitor from a very unnatural angle...

      Still very annoying.

I have an AG Neovo 19" TFT, which I think is absolutely fantastic at everything it does, I use it for general use and also for some video editing, and I feel that it outperforms my old CRT easily. Occasionally I get a funny ghosting on DVDs, but I think that is more to do with the appalling Graphics card I am running (Radeon 9200 128mb, in a PCI slot not AGP 8) so I think it is time to get me a Radeon 9800 or an x800.

It might not be a 5 pot or an S2... but at least I have a 20v Turbo in my life again.

In my experience Intel will not promote this chip architecture. TBH i dont care, at the moment if you compare the price of one of these chips and motherboard to a FX chip or P4E and motherboard there is no choice. The only question is if you do a lot of video encoding i guess, but for gaming it gets my vote.

As regards to monitors, i have just ordered a Dell FP2405P, 24" of widescreen goodness. I have kept my IIyama 22" until i'm convinced the Dell can take its place.

That's the philosophy I use to decide when to upgrade... and at the moment my 3+ year old (AMD) Athlon XP 1800+ and associated similarly aged gubbins do the job more than adequately.

Work's a different story: all laptops are Pentium M now, and a very quick. Desktops, which tend to get stuffed with more memory than the Pentium M's can support (max 2GB I believe) are usually now Athlon 64 based.

As for the monitors, I use a 17 inch Sony Trinitron (CRT) monitor, and wouldn't change it by choice. If it blows up though, it'll be a TFT replacement.

My new Formac Gallery (replacing my venerable Formac 1900) is the dogs. Fills my deskspace and soooooo vibrant. Pantone calibrated too gives me a very close match.
Problem with CRT monitors in the workplace is the liability factor and i know of no desktop user who has migrated to a TFT monitor who wants to go back to a CRT.
I am not saying they are the be all and end all, but they are here to stay and the crt is long finished. The old adage applies though, you get what you pay for.
Intel vs. Athlon.... no contest, Intel everytime for me because i cannot be arsed patching Intel developed software to run on AMD chipsets. This does not happen very often now though but it did in the early days, a lot, so i'm a bit stuck in my ways. As for computers... I have a Mac running OS-X or a HP Vizualise running HP Unix v 11.02 as well as my Windaz box, i've been using 64 bit for years, so have many others.
I play no games though i must admit to admiring the graphics of some games very much.
It is either personal preference or, in my case, stuff i have used for years and my inbuilt reluctance to change.
As an addendum, in my experience, most people who use exclusively a Mac or Linux have an axe to grind with Windaz users, Windows users generally have no axe to grind. There are exceptions but this is my experience. I use whatever i feel is the best tool for the job but i cannot remember the last time XP locked up on my machine, it is now very stable in my opinion, for general use. The exception is of course using Windows as a firewall or "secure server", never happened.

i been a big fan of amd but lately switched to p4 3gig hyper threading.

traditionally amd overtook pentium on speed but not realability hence why business go for pentiums.

I very much admire AMD's tenacity and they do make a more "games friendly" chipset. It is my opinion that AMD targeted the home user and Intel stayed corporate. It may not be so, but certainly looks that way.
I have one of the new dual core processors with two 72 gig Raptors on a Raid config for the OS as my personal machine, snappy:-) But one of my favourite boxes is a Poweredge with a quad Xeon setup. Just took delivery of it and it has so many toys on it (battery backup - on the RAID controller!!) it is a pleasure to use, real horsepower:-)
