my audi s2 is up for sale. The car is in great condtion. It has had a nothelle conversion with rs2 turbo/manifold.All the bushes/rollbars/ball joints.mounts have just been replaced. It has had new dizzy/leads/plugs/hoses fitted by mrc in febuary. It was mot/taxed only yesterday for 12 months, and today has just had 4 wheel aligenment/camber/castor setup. The reason i am selling it is a tapping has just developed in the engine and i have no time/money/patience!!left with the car

Can you describe the noise a bit mate??

As in where in the engine is it from? is it permanently doing it or just sometimes?? etc

if it is a tappety noise might be as simple as an oil change - i have had this on mine and a good change sorted it out....

i dont like to say it but i think it is bottom end as it is quite a heavy bang as does not sound like tappets/dizzy.The oil pressure light did come on before the banging started and the temperature increased to 120degrees.I had the car towed home and have not started it since. The noise is probably worst at 2000-2500rpm,but seems to dissapear as you rev the engine but i cant be sure as the engine is so damned noisey anyway when you rev it up.Their was no problems atall with the car prior to this evening it just came from nowhere!

                  dean,

I'd let somebody whose "engine savvy" have a look/listen to it , I'm sure there's somebody on the forum near you who could do that for you, as mentioned by others might be something trivial, but either way if you're selling it , it's gonna be hard to sell a car with a known "problem" so makes sense t o get it looked at or fixed , be a hell of a lot easier to sell especially with the other work you've had done.

hi thanks eric.May have been a bit abrupt last night but its so annoying though!especially as it was running so well and had only just had mot/tax/tracking/tyres/battery/service yesterday!
I think i will get someone who knows more about the car to have a listen but my dad had a listen and he is quite mechanically minded and said it was to harsh(metallic) of a noise to be a top end fault, and it is most likely top end bearings gone????But if their is any chance that it is something gone wrong in the bottom end (which i assume is gonna cost lots!)the car is gonna have to go!Even if its a quick fix!
                    many thanks

Did you check the milege after it came back from the mot ? Did you trust the garage who did the work?

                        Very good point....

Dean.....is it possible the garage mechanics gave your car a sound pasting and brought this problem on??
If so ....get on to them ASAP

This has crossed my mind as the garage had the car all day to do the tracking/camber, and also when i went to collect it the lad started the engine and said their was a funny noise which at this time though couldnt be heard!Im guessing when they do the tracking they would have to run the car to make sure the settings are correct, but i didnt set the clock back before i took it their! However the car has been the several times before and i have had no problems and they do seem to be genuine guys!but the it is coincidence that it happened at the same time!!!!!!!
                          many thanks

Sounds like there was a prob with your oil pump and that has caused damage to your bottom end. Reason being your oil light came on for a short time and soon after you ran your big end.

It is hard to tell just reading about it as its always better to hear the noise but 90% sure your big ends have gone . Any garage will be able to diagnose the prob

yea the oil light came on but thats when u pulled over stop the car and had a good look.Their were no leaks and the oil level was fine! But when i started the engine up again the banging was their! Is it a major job replacing the big ends, anyone have any ideas how much it would cost???Oh just been out and started her and the noise is still their. The oil does not look good but has only covered 1500miles.Also as soon as i started it from cold the oil pressure went straight up to 4 bar.
