Oil pressure should go to 5 bar from cold, can you whip the sump off to have a look?

It is not worth selling the car if the big ends have gone, as all the money you have spent on the car would be wasted, it would probably be cheaper to buy a second hand motor ( £600-£800) and sell off your old cylinder head, inlet manifold etc.... to recoupe the money

By the way as soon as i saw the word "LAD" alarm bells started ringing ........

yea i guess taking the sump off is not to much of a job???Can you see everything then in the bottom end once the sump is removed? But if the top end bearings have gone then the whole engine would have to be removed? But a mechanic or someone who knows about these cars should be able to tell me where the noise is coming from?
      many thanks

        Big Ends is most likely...........
Dont drive the car is my advice as metal particles will just damage other parts of the engine//

If needed Im sure you could get a second hand engine and pay one of the better mechanics on the forum to come over for the day to swap it in...........

        Try Wab ?..............

or// drop the sump off and investigate....take pics adn post them up....

or get a "good" mechanic to have a look.

Any garage who would leave a big end noise without giving you the facts is not worth their salt IMHO

"Lad" As in someone who speaks complete ******** and has no clue (Kwikfit, Wilcos, Fastfit, Halfords, ) i know you should'nt descriminate against people but the amount of w*****s i have dealt with in the past at garages is shocking. I now only take my car to people i know and respect to have work done.
The sump can be a bit of a pita if you havent got a ramp, but drain the oil first, that may give you some indication of the damage.

yea i didnt mean a lad as in those as you mentioned but the guy who had done the work!He didnt seem bad and knew his stuff but did mention the knocking!ok i have just drained the oil and their is no metal or anything that shouldnt be their present although the oil does not look good considering its only done roughly 1500miles!Gonna put some fresh oil in then get it up on a ramp tommorrow and have the sump off to get a rough idea as to what has gone wrong!

Sorry to hear about your car dean ,I had the same problem with my 3b, a metalic sound coming from the top of the engine ,turned out to be a spun bearing on no5. I had a couple of mechanics look at the car and an audi technition , they all said it was something in the top of the engine and not the bottom end, but they where all wrong. I had to take the head of with the engine in the car, not an easy job I can tell you, with the head of we found nothing wrong. Then I tried to see if there was any movement in the top of the pistons and no 5 dropped down a few mm making the elusive sound, took the sump of and found the bearing on no5 had allmost dissintegrated the rest is history.

hi thanks for that!so its gonna be hard really to determine where the noise is coming from, without stripping the engine?Suppose first thing is to drop the sump, thenyou can see if its the bottom end bearings? Then remove the head to check the top end?All of which can be done without removing the engine?
                    thanks guys

I just bought a set of big end bearings from my local stealer (at the time, I thought I was in a rush) - cost £80, so not a big deal if that's all that needs replacing.

I had a chat with Tom who told me that my old bearings were quite worn and would have soon made an audible tapping sound from the engine - I got the impression it was a rather recognisable problem/sound. I do remember being told that if you're good you can replace the bearings by just dropping the sump, so hopefully it's not such a big job for you!

thanks ross so i the parts arent to expensive and if you can fit them by removing the sump its not to bad either!fingers crossed then it is the big ends not the small ends!the thing is the noise came on all at once, the engine was running as sweet as anything before had?well hopefully find out the damage tommorrow!
                          thanks again

Dean if you have access to a ramp its much easier to take the sump of , if not it can be done on axle stands but its a little harder as you have to drop the subframe. You will need two sump gaskets to put it back on,one ether side of the metel baffel plate.I also think its a must to change the oil pump about £150. Make sure you check all the big ends one at a time, as 1/2/and3 where fine on my car but 4 was going and 5 was no more. I am no exspert, but if I can help, Pm me.btdt. cheers Lou.

sounds like you may have spun a bearing to me, best thing to do would be to pm someone like sal for another bottom end,

if a bearing has picked up, your into crank re grind, flush out the full system to insure no bits are left in, new bearings, oil cooler etc and prob a few other bits you will find along the way,

cars not worth half as much with a fooked engine, understand you just want get shut,
