  • Fair price for 7a cylinder head w/ cams

Hi there, just wondering what is a fair price for a 7a cylinder head with cams?
It has 180k miles and seems in order (no cracks, cam lobes and buckets show no wear and is not warped)...

Just want my money's worth and not be greedy at the same time...

Note that I am in North America and I think they are more rare here.

I figured cams are at least worth 250usd ...

    Cheers

250 USD sounds about right for the cams....

Good 7A heads are now fetching silly money on eBay, especially if machined ready for use in a turbo car.

The last 7A head I sold without cams was £250. That was a few years ago now, so I'd guess it would be £300 or more.

Check out what they change hands for on eBay, crazy money!!!!!!!!!!! I sold a 3B S2 head in 2016 for £350, kicking myself now, though I do have a good 7A head as a spare in stock.

$250 bucks sounds fair for a good set of 7A cams, I recently got a mint pair of NM's for £200 GBP.

If the head is really good shape $500 wouldn't be out of the way these days.

Try without. Sell them separately. They're not easy to find anymore. If you're selling to the US sell and ship in USD.

Assuming the head is in a good state (no snapped studs and valve guide ware well within tolerances) I'd say it has to be worth $500 USD without cams and I'd sell them separately for around the $250 USD mark.

              Hope this helps.

Also, is this machined for Water manifold and Cam sensor or "un machined"?

500 US Buck's machined seems about right these days if anything a little cheap if it's in really good shape... Non machined 7A/NM heads are currently selling for over 700 Euro's via eBay on the continent with machined ready to fit to a 20VT car examples commanding the best part of a grand!!!

I'd have to double check but am pretty sure the test procedure goes like this..

To do the test one must remove the collets, valve spring retention caps as well as the springs themselves, then by rights one requires a brand new valve to do it by the book, though a used one with no sign of wear (measured with a micrometer) will suffice. Ensuring there is no contamination lubricate the stem with light weight oil (I use gun oil) and insert the valve into the guide as if your fitting it, though stop when the end of the stem is flush with top of it's guide. Then rock the valve back and forth across a 180 degree plain while measuring it's total travel side to side with a dial gauge positioned against the edge of the valve crown, it's a bit of a fiddle and by rights requires VAG tool VW 387 to correctly locate the dial gauge, though you can get around this by using a home made plate to clamp the gauge.

                      Spec's are...

Inlet, max play 1.0 mm or 0.039".

Exhaust, max play 1.3 mm or 0.051"

It's something of a fiddly job and the only reason I know the specs of the top of my head is I had to this recently with a MK2 16V GTI head and the procedure is the same, indeed I believe the valve themselves are identical sodium filled items on the exhaust side.
