S2 needing some TLC

A local chap and his mates who are into their VW's and Audi's came round to look at the car in the interest of buying it.
One guy actually used to own a 3B model in Emerald Green so he knew quite a lot about them.
They plugged in VAGcom again but could not get a reading (Jason tried but could not get a reading from it)
They took the spark plug cover off and tried to get the car to spark but there is no spark at all.
Does anyone know what would cause this to happen?
The young lad said he would have bought her due to the condition of the car but it was the non working engine that put him off even though he knew the fault might be an easy one.Comment

AndyP - me and Jason sorted the problem with the spark plug lead which had been destroyed. He also double checked the spark plugs and a few of them were loose so they were tightened up.
The threads have not been torn off so that was a bit of a relief.
Pastures16 - I just wish it was as easy as pouring water on the sensor. Still don't know where the sensor is located.Comment

Sensor is located at the front of the engine, behind the cambelt - PITA to get to!
Requires removal of the secondary radiator (if you have one), power steering pump belt, and the cambelt cover. But you can simply pour (cold) water down the back of the cambelt cover - that's kept me going this week, but it sounds like your problem is a bit more serious...Past: S2 ABY coupe RS2 spec with lots of mods, S4 B5 saloon, RS6 C5 saloon, S8 D2 FL, RS4 B7 saloon, S4 B6 avant

Good News
I have had the week off so I thought I would look at the S2 today.
I poured water as suggested on the hall sensor and also checked every single fuse. I then gave it a shot to see if she would work and she fired up straight away.
I am well chuffed now as I thought she would never work again. The only thing is that she will need the head gasket changed and also one of the spark plugs sounds like it is not tightened right as there seems to be a sound of air passing on the third spark plug. This is strange as Jason checked these and then double checked them to see that they were all tightened.
The car is still for sale.Comment

I used to pour water on mine but it gets worse over time.
Not that hard to change to change actually a little time consuming. Ideally you should change the cambelt at the same time though.
I hate it when i'm right
( hey gotta take the glory now and again

fourcircle - forget this - its an ABY/ADU phenomenon... Your 3B has its hall-effect sensor somewhere else. I responded to your thread - I think you will be happy

Strange, all of those plugs were tight, 30nm tight
A Micheal means a rocker cover gasket, not a head gasket. Not urgent, but will need changing at some point.
