ive always found whats meant to be is meant to be...
no bad luck involved really. if you really wanted the car you would have bought it. thats how it goes.
whats particularly wrong whith yours?
if it needs cheap upgrades id look at the following.
1. boost controller really kiss the **** out of the standard setup. better delivery with better hold and no fluctuation. i could do a permanent 1.1bar with mine in standard form no issue with fueling. hit boost sooner and held it for longer.
2. cut a cat out.
3. fit a CAI. good ones work.
for a more money and to out do the RS2 you need a bigger turbo. RS2 stuff is old school now. there are lots of more modern parts that are alos cheaper. the USA is your parts friend.
1. full system, manifold and turbo must be first but best fitted at same time as a manifold as some dont use factory turbo location like mine. looking at 2000 quid there including parts. i paid 250 for my tubular and 399 for my sc61 plus i had corey do the system to match the exhaust manifold.
2. standalone is a must. get rid of the maf. from previous experience MAF's can blow with higher boost. also they restrict airflow badly. when i took off the maf and fitted the CAI i had to tweak my map and redo boost as i was hitting another 0.2 of a bar at same setting. better airfeed.
with some squirters i think 380hp is doable at that level. then id say rods. these engines work like the 16v did and i did lots of research on those. ill get a better idea on the rollers this weekend.
for parts speak to paul at the boostfactory. mention that i sent you that way. what paul doesn't know about turbos and VAG 4v engines isn't worth knowing. this guy made record 16vt figures a few times. think he finished chasing big 16v figures at 531whp. He's a scat supplier too and can do the rods for very good money along with garrett and precision stuff, tial, pauter etc.

I agree with the 'what is meant to be sentiment' here but I don't agree with much of the rest of it...
On the budget options -
1 - Boost controllers are fundamentally flawed... All they do is allow higher/sooner levels of boost without any consideration for fuel or timing. So, yes they create more boost than the standard setup. Oh and 1.1bar at the redline is seriously shortening the life of a K24 turbo - it has long since turned into a hairdryer with the air temp coming out at that point. Just look at the compressor map. A proper ECU upgrade/remap is required to get more performance in standard trim with correct accomodation for boost, fuel and timing and all those really boring things like knock protection and failsafe modes that boost controllers have no mechanism for.
2 - Agree on that - or use SPorts Cat(s) if necessary for MOT stuff
3 - A what now ?
You forgot to add a couple of other cheap routes - like an RS2 intercooler or an RS2 airbox (or modify the stock one for less restriction).
On the bigger money options.....
1 - The RS2 turbo and manifold is THE tried and tested route to monster torque and getting towards 100bhp per wheel on the S2. Nothing wrong with old school - as long as its a good school
It has reliability and durability proof that goes way beyond any of the newer fangled custom fabricated EMs around. BUt of course if your goals are well above 450bhp then you need something bigger than RS2 EM and the RS2 turbo will long since be out of puff. Reco'd RS2 turbos can be had for £750 and a new RS2 EM is about £450. Good value for money there in getting to such a well proven setup. The RS2 turbo is the only one in the world that anyone ever designed specifically for the I5T engine... So if your application is within that operating range then its damn hard to beat.
2 - Standalone ECU is absolutely NOT a must. There are plenty of cars running 300-400-500-600bhp on Motronic ECU. You do not NEED to remove the MAF in most instances. The problem is that only a handful of folk know how to remap Motronic turbo properly. Many chequebook tuners will tell you they can get these great figures from the engine if its running some aftermarket system. Now, there are some good aftermarket systems available - and some bad ones. The only good reason I can see for anyone to fit aftermarket is if they plan to do the mapping themselves - cos if you aren't getting that customisation from it then it wouldn't matter if Audi or your tuner used Motronic or a ZX81 for the ECU... The cost of good aftermarket ECU is *way* in excess of decent mapping by a Motronic expert.
Stock fuelling takes you to ~320bhp max whereas RS2 configuration is about 420bhp. Beyond that you are into even larger injectors.
Stock rods are good up to 500-550Nm. Go forged beyond that.
We've seen stock pistons go beyond 450bhp with ease. Go forged if monster torque and benefits from lighter bottom end are of more importance.
Stock wastegate is fine for modified RS2 applications. The chaps running 500bhp with monster turbos often fit aftermarket WG and usually have twin TBVs as well.
Cheers,
Paul
