I assume that one would need a high power car with little or no restrictions in the airflow so the the standard MAF became the bottleneck?

    Hello
It can handle moore power due to the bigger inner diameter (89mm) and the sensor precision is better on the SQ maf.
If you use the stock maf in a bigger tube as many do it will be hard to get the car stabile on idle.
For the SQ maf with its precision thats no problem.
