Just a quickie (ooh erh) Would you entertain an S2 with service history upto 117k miles but has 143k on the clock??
I know it's only 26k miles, but a lot seems to go wrong on these cars(as I can see from this forum) Would you risk it?

Personally? yes I would. I don't think many people would put a car this old through a dealer or specialist as *most* owners seem to work on these cars themselves and probably wont be selling the car on. My S has history up to mid 80k's its now 105K and I know the oil and filter have been changed every couple of months (by me) and had so much money spent on her, its better than a service history where they kick the tyres and oevrcharge you.....
If you're looking to buy this, why not see if there is a local club member who can come with you?

I agree with Martin. Bring someone with you. I did that too. I brought my missus with me and she determined that it was a feckin loud and unconfortable car....58000 miles ....and I bought it and than the missus noticed the fuel consumption......Don't go alone. Bring someone who knows....

I'm going to see it tomorrow . I was just wondering if anyone knows the car. K*** KWW. If that bit rings a bell please could you pm me. It doesn't have a/c but after reading all the problems you guys have with it, that seems to be a good thing.
Are there any major do's and don'ts for me to look for?
I spent 5 years in the motor trade so I know the basics, are there any vital points on the S2 to look out for?

for all the S2 related points you must look at, check out Pauls excellent S2Central buyers gide!! all points are covered really well!! http://s2central.net/ as for air con? again, my opinion, I couldn't give a hoot about it, extra weight to be lugged about, mine is being ripped out very soon as it hardly ever worked. Some people who want a perfectly stock S2 would prefer working aircon, I guess its all personal pref. really.... Enjoy hunting one down sorry, I'm too far away
whines from the tranny or rear diff spell ££££££'s normally, clunks and creaks from the front suspension means tired wishbone bushes, top mounts, drop links, track rod ends etc....
check the speedo works, some stick, the idle oil pressure should be around 2bar or above, check for creaking and groaning steering across the full lock to lock and ensure that the pressure builds up and you can hear it. On a 3b with servotronic go round a roundabout and ensure the pressure is constant, some go light, then a bit heavier if its tired. Also check the bomb for emergency brake pressure. If the car is cold, check you dont get a warning light on starting and press the brakes once to see if you get an OK from the dash... a (!) could indicate the bomb at fault.
Make sure you are getting clean boosting across each gear too, lumpy boost coule mean airleaks which are easy enough to fix but take some time, plus some hoses are not cheap to replace....
Don't be scared about going on your own, I bought mine on my own, but I guess I was lucky as i was the first to see it and the owner was completely **** and it was a summer use only car. There were a few faults, like the Aircon not working and the (!) light, but it passed the bomb test so apart from that it was mint. I think it is like buying any car, if you are careful, like the owner, it has a genuine service history - go for it. If in any doubt walk away, there will always be other cars out there. Buying a car with your heart is the most dangerous thing!
Good luck - Steve.

Great choice in next car.If you can get one with full service history thats all good and well, but dont be fooled into thinking that means its pukker. Many here have had v bad experiences with main stealers,as they're not necessarily the experts.
The buyers guide Martyn pointed you towards is all you need, but if you can get someone off the forum to go with you even better.
Good luck tomorrow

I can not believe you wrote these words. Do we have the same wife ? They should probably get together, I am sure they have a lot in common.
I bought my car as a primary use car, ie she would have to ride in it. No go. Nor would I sell it, so I bought a 1.8T Passat (1999), which she likes and keep the audi 'out of sight' for the most part.
me and my bro went together, it was the only s2 for sale at the time and we paid 9.5k for it while it had 170k on the clock.
got ripped off as later we found it needed a new fuel tank (which the dealers installed).(and no receipt of a cam belt change at 170k ) (we were clueless at the time).
Looking at whats around we prob could of got one with half the miles.
Looked at a couple, just got the feeling i'd found the right one at time i went down to London.
Although with the smegging Aux Rad on it's way out and VAG parts giving me a heart attack on the price of one (no reflection on VAG parts, Main Steelers want so much i'd have to pimp my body ), i hope thats my only problem for a long time!!!
Love the car though, it's just so comfy and then when my right foot feels heavy it just goes like the wind , just gotta find someone local to look service it else nice round trip to Dialynx!
