Potential Death of an A6 Allroad

Long story short - I am almost ready to pour a can of fuel on this old tank, retire to a safe distance and laugh at the reduced stress in my life!!!

This old girls most recent failure was an alternator failure in the same week as discovery of a leak in the fuel tank.

During the 3hr joy of stripping the front to get to the alternator - the tensioner bracket for the accessory belt sheared when I was leaning on it to remove the belt. Hate is not a big enough word !

That was the last straw so I am looking at some controversial options here :

1 - torch it and claim off insurance (joking)
2 - strip it on the driveway and break for parts
3 - sell it as is for someone else to break
4 - have it lifted for pure scrap
5 - persevere and fix it ... 80 quid for tensioner plus 100 reco'd alternator plus another day of my life wasted on the driveway to get it going again - then hope to trade in as a runner against something else

There is no way I am swapping out the fuel tank - that is a day up on a 2-post lift and requires all the rear end to come out... Plus refurb and paint etc of the subframe before it goes back in.

Life is too short for that - keeping fuel below half seems to be ok, but I wouldn't sell the car privately without telling the new owner and that discounts about 99.9% normal people from being vaguely interested in such a car.

So - who in NI / IE / UK would be interested in some of the juicier parts ???

    - Electric leather recaros in very good condition - black and grey

    - matching leather door cards

    - Bose amp and speakers

    - recently refurb'd front calipers

    - recently renewed rear air springs and bilstein dampers ... Cost me over 500 quid

    - twin spoke wheels (all rough) and 6 month old tyres

    - engine is still strong and solid ... Some sweaty top gaskets but still stonking with good turbo and fuel pump too. Starts first time every time. Obviously the alternator is toast at the moment.

    - air con works perfectly - good compressor, condenser etc

    - radiator is perfect

    - oil cooler is perfect

    - transmission (auto) is good and healthy too

    - exhaust comes off easily too and is in great shape for the age.

    - 3 month old rear tie rods

Basically it's a perfect donor car for anyone with a similar age allroad or for anyone else with the time and interest to break it up

If this car was sitting in England I am sure it would be easy to part out but it's gonna be tricky over here - especially as I have limited time and interest in the old thing.

In fairness it has been a bloody fantastic vehicle that has served us well over the past nine years and nearly 100k miles. Sure it has broken my heart a few times with air suspension woes, chocolate camshafts and the list goes on but it will be hard to replace the big tank with something as practical and dare I say character as everyone who knows us spots us miles away in such a rare old (ugly) bus.

I am open to opinions and offers at the moment - it's not strictly a for sale thread with prices yet as I am walking along the knife edge of that rare medical condition known as DVD - deep vehicular depression - actually I suppose it's not so rare amongst us old Audi nuts !!!

thats cars for you chap...trying re-buidling a 5 pot when you'd been reliable informed various parts had been done/changed only to find out that is not the case...take a break, have a drink and look again when your not under the effects of DVD....

I dig the allroads/A6's despite their image as being an "old mans car"....

Actually this one is more an old woman's car - the missus really digs it - but hates the increasing unreliability of the old girl. It will have to be replaced one way or the other - there isn't enough alcohol in the house to change my mind !

Only question is whether to fix it up enough to be traded in, parted out, sold as is or just scrapped.

nightmare, i think i had an equal love hate with our old bus.

Is there no way you can patch the fuel tank in situ rather than drop the rear to swap it out...sounds like a bi*ch of a job.

is this a c5 chassis? as i have just bought one , and am just about to buy a new rear air spring,,after i recon the compressor, so i may be keen on the rear suspension parts.

Paul how much do you need for it? Pm me or text if you like. I have no real need for one but I'm just about weird enough to be interested in a project. Maybe...

No sadly not - it's way up in totally inaccessible area. Total pita. Can't get light up there - never mind fingers. Sure if I had a ramp and nothing else to worry about then it might be an interesting job and chance to clean up subframe etc but I can't gather up the energy to even think about doing that.

After a nice glass of red my mood has calmed a bit towards getting the alternator and tensioner done so at the least the old tank is running again.... Buying time to look for a replacement and maybe a chance for trade in on something local (unlikely though). I don't want to rush purchase of something else - although Tonksies 5cyl TDi Avant tickles my interest as a cheap and cheerful temporary option.

Keeping fuel level low should curtail the leak. We figured it only presented itself after taking advantage of cheaper fuel prices last weekend with a 50 quid top up instead of 30.

Cheers Des - mood is more to get it mobile again so we have some options open so let me take a rain check on that offer for now - if something else breaks tomorrow though it might push me properly over the brink. Herself doesn't want to rush for another car right now and I must say there isn't much choice at the moment for our budget and requirements after looking at autotrader for a couple of hours. We live on the wrong island for all the good cars anyway. Seems like all the locals only buy 2wd and cloth seats for a start. Ahh the joys.

Got the busted bracket out and amazingly TPS have one on the shelf - which tells me it's a common enough failure. Needed to swing aircon pump otf for access to that but it's an easy three bolts.

The rear bolt on the ac pump carrier is a bit of doozy but at least with ac pump swung around it makes it way easier to get the actual alternator out.

The worst bit of the alternator is access to the M8 nut securing the battery cable ... Had to get air pipe and water pipe out of the way first.

All done on the driveway in the wind and snow. Joy joy my heart is full of joy though I will probably catch pneumonia as a bonus prize !

New tensioner bracket and carrier for ac pump refitted - in the snow. Hopefully the refurb'd alternator arrives tomorrow and we will be sucking diesel again shortly after.

Good work for mustering up the enthusiasm to to the work Paul! I know only too well how frustrating some of these early 2000's audis can be. Ive got 2 myself causing me a load of greif. My 2003 B6 S4 keeps finding new interesting ways to keep me tinkering and a 2002 D2 A8 ive aquired is causing me to loose hair!

I am conscious it's a S2 Forum and I don't want to hijack this Allroad thread, but you might consider starting a S8 D2 thread on here, as I'm, and possibly others, are interested in what goes wrong / is troublesome with these cars, but don't want to have to lurk on an S8 forum.

                            Thanks either way.
