Running out of time to get dressed and get to work now, but would something around Lambda be of use? In my mind I have an Autocheck version of something like this (Demon Tweeks link).

    Ck.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

My input on this is as follows -

Keep it simple first - just displaying digits is sufficiently simple to prove the concept.

I would stay away from any bar graph or needle style guage at first - its just additional complexity that isn't needed at this stage.

Its going to need to support BAR and PSI display. My preference is BAR by default as that is what the ECU understands. A simple mode switch on the control module will provide the user with a choice. The display controller can easily convert units.

We need to understand what the boost sample and display refresh rates are going to be before attempting anything useful with graphical displays.

Once I can control the display with hardware it should be very easy to display Boost (to start with) any way people would like. I will write software to do a bar-graph and digit display in Bar and PSI. This should please all requests for the time being. Further suggestions will be included in software up-grades.

Displaying other metrics (Lambda, IC intake/output temps, EGT) is perfectly possible but these will require additional hardware. My plan is to make the first module so that it will accept plug-in modules that will be produced with a software uo-grade.

Please keep the ideas coming but understand that as yet I have not been able to scope what is possible so can not comment on if your desires will be met.

@ctolloday - please don't hesitate to ask if you want help with this. I'm no PIC expert but I do have a background in embedded software & electronics & DSP systems etc etc.

My car is off the road most if the time so I can help investigate things on my Autocheck module if need be - though I'm glad you have sourced a guinea pig for any potential destructive tests.

Keep me posted with any detailed findings on chips and drivers relevant to the display. No need to share all the gory internal details with the forum until there is something concrete. Happy to assist with this if I can... If we can understand how to drive the little screen then we can start thinking about all the things that could be done.

An alternate approach would be to replace the Autocheck screen with a more modern display (higher resolution, more colours) and interface that thru a suitable adapter to the Autocheck system. Supplement that with the ability to display boost, EGT, IAT, KDI, fault codes and anything else we can think of (by means of upgrades) then it starts to look really cool.

On a most extreme level we could just engineer an entirely new generation of Autocheck module that replaced the widget in the instrument cluster. It could just interface directly to the vehicle wiring for the autocheck alerts (water temp, washer bottle etc etc) and deliver that info onto a new screen that locates perfectly in the window where the original Autocheck module once lived. This path is complicated by need for custom PCB and maybe some special casing & connectors to make it pin compatible with the original item, but dang it would be a very clean way to go.

Oh well - cats out of the bag now. I just baked that idea on the fly. Thats what a few days off work does for you

Interesting reaction Paul... a few days off work usually results in lots of sleep, wasted time, and a very clean car for me.

Interesting project though. I guess this is what happens when you've done all the regular mods eh?

I newer display with all th epositive things will be great but also a very expensive and difficult route!

Could it be connected to an PC with a USB for Softaware upgrades?
I think the Displaying of Fault codes will not be difficult even with the old Original Module!

I still think the Autocheck is a Far mor refined method that will look Faboulous and also give usefull infos!

If we cannot do it then the next part will be the Clock or the Board Computer, but it can be done! I have seen it work!

Why go to the hassle of doing that?? when you can buy the sensor and display for "not" a lot of money and wire it in easy enough?

Dunno if you thought about it, but wouldn't be possible to decode the signals from an old gamma/delta headunit? I know it has been solved that way on the later Audi cars.
