Looks the same - you get different grades of it - I have the double skinned stuff - you get stuff with a thermal material in between that would be even better.

I got mine from Merlin Motorsport but if anyone knows where you can get it cheaper I would appreciate it.

The air duct is a great idea, the more fresh cool air the better I haven't seen Doug's heat shield, but the stuff I have is twin skin without the middle layer of fibre. It sounds like the same stuff as Doug's.
When I remove the aux rad later in the year and replace it with a monster oil cooler I'll make some space for the ducting.

I´ve wrapped up both the tubular manifold and the downpipe. I´ve only driven the car for about 3000 km (and did all engine mods at the same time) so I can´t say if it is giving any more power. But I mainly did it since they are both made of non-stainless steel and now it can rust in the quiet and I don´t have to see it

Steve, looks like its coming on a treat! That engine is looking like new.

Just out of interest, what did you pay to refurb the head and replace all the valves etc???

I am seriously thinking after 155000 miles that i should check everything out and change those smoking valve stem seals etc etc.

Good luck with the gearboxes and looking fwd to seeing her on the road again!!!

David, The story of my head is a bit of a nightmare

I've spent a small fortune on it during the past 12 months and I'm not convinced it was the best option to take in the long run. I think it's seen a hard life and I'll be looking at picking up a spare for future mods. All in all I've spent far too much on it..

                        Last year -
Strip head, remove/replace all studs, Helicoil a few threads, replace valve guides, re-cut all valve seats, rebuild and skim - £420

                        This year -
                        Pressure test - £50 (failed)

Ultraseal resin impregnation & pressure test - £120 (failed)

Welding & pressure test - free (passed)

Replace two valve guides & skim - £50

                        Replace hydraulic lifters - £115

                        Total - £755 :eek2:

I'm sure I could have picked up a nice 2nd hand one for a damn sight less. However, once you start a job it's difficult to call it quits once you've already invested a fair few £££.

                          WOW! Was that including labor??
I pay about $7-9USD each for lifters here...

                            Dave,

The rebuild of the head last year was done by local machine shop. The price includes labour. It would have been a lot cheaper if I'd stripped and rebuilt the head myself. I was too busy at the time so I paid for them to do it.

Car is finally running The first 30 minutes after the initial start was pretty worrying The new hydraulic lifters made one hell of a noise until the engine had warmed up. They eventually went silent, leaving me to focus my attention on clouds of white and blue smoke from the exhaust. I expected a bit of smoke, but this was far worse than I thought it would be. Has anyone experience of bedding in after bore honing? What should I expect to see as smoke and what sort of oil consumption is usual? After 100 miles of driving the blue smoke has reduced dramatically, however, it's still evident at idle. Should I be worried about this?
I've tried to take it real easy, but haven't been able to stop my self from giving it a little nudge on the gas. I'd forgotten just how quick the S2 is

New gearbox is really sweet Unfortunately, the Sachs clutch doesn't appear to be up to the job Looks like it will have to be slightly de-tuned to make it last..I really don't want it to look like this again soon...

I had to add about 1 litre of oil in the first 1500kms with new piston rings. Now when nearly 7000km is behind the oil consumption is very close to 0.

I'd say that your blue smoke is not normal, but try to drive the first 1000-15000 kms using minimal boost only. If it still smokes after that, start worrying.

                                It might be the turbo...
