In my opinion I would use a 01E gearbox (As you can find in the S4)

I can also mention that guys like Jonus and Jens Eklund who is running sub 10/low 9 sec cars are using the 01E gearboxes (they run 1000+ BHP)

Follow these 3 links and you will learn alot on this topic.

As mentioned over the rear drive shafts and carriers(?) are the weak points when dragracing. The carriers can be upgrade by using carriers from the avant. (needs some machining/modification to fit)

EDIT: I ****ed up the links, they should work now...

Driveshafts would probably be replaced anyway, so no problem there, but i can't think of what the carriers might be...?

i am building my car since 2001. now the car has more than 600hp and the setup is very safe. my best 1/4 is 11.0 with 212km/h on 2.1 bar. i had street tires and very bad 1.9sec 60feet. can be better on 2.5 bar with hard als. i tryed one time. i had 7.0on 1/8 with same bad 60 feet, but i blowed one of my ignition coil. so i think the gt35/40r with .63ar hotside,on stroker, can run 10.6- 10.7sec on 1/4 mile. very driveable on street. my wife can go to shopping with it, nobody can hit on the street.
i think this is the easyest and best way. dont have to try or think. copy one of the safe, finished project from this forum.
i think, this is the best shopping list:

        wagner im
        sq em
stock block, with stroker pistons, tdi crank, 144 rods
        750injectors
        044 pump
        gt35/40r
        ported,head
        catcams camshafts
        oversized supertech valves
        600x300x76 ic
        76 or bigger exhaust
        standalone ecu

        i hope its helped.

        good luck

Every bit of info helps, thanks

The whole point of this thread is to try and avoid reinventing hot water, just copy from the best experience of the others.

TDI crank...now, i'm a bit baffled with all these blocks, cranks, gearboxes being interchangeable between generations of different Audis over...how long, 10-15 years? Diesel crank in I5T engine...hm, ok, if it works...So i just find a first TDI5 crank i come up with (any particular car that i need to take it from?), put some better bearings inside (RS2), and that's it, no heavier modifications needed?

6-speed tranny, well, i'd like that, but i've now heard a TON of advices - 016 from first quattros from the 80's, 01E from the S4 both 5 and 6 speed, gearbox from an RS2, or latest ABY or AAN gearboxes...confusing. Not that i'm doubting any of the advice, i'm surely not competent enough to doubt anybody or anything (yet ), but it's a bit...hard to decide

Great info from Aronmatic there... Some more details required on specifics if you wanted to copy that setup but its a good base - plus he might even share some aftermarket maps to get you running !

We can collect more info on that and diesel cranks and such - meanwhile SEARCH the forum for 2.5 stroker and you'll get good data on that. AEL and AAT engine codes ring a bell for me - but not 100% sure sitting where I am

            016 5-speed or 01E 6-speed is good enough.

Ok, great, i've got a pretty good idea what to do from here on...

Now, as for the rear and front diffs - any need to change or upgrade those for e.g. Quaife, as they're prone to failure?

Well - if money is no object then there are some exotic 'ATB' diffs available for the 01E. Other more exotic tranny options include some custom items from a Swedish vendor - I can't remember his name though - sorry but someone else will remember.

ATB diff was what i had in mind, yes.

Items from the Swedish vendor - what items, exactly, the diff, driveshafts...?

The question was more in terms if the change was really meaningful at all. Is there any need to change the factory diff because of some weaknesses it has, or not?

If it needs to be changed, i'd still go for Quaife ATB, as i'd always choose mechanical Torsen-type variable rate locking diff over a friction-plate based design, because of inherent flaws of friction plate design...

What about the cams - if you could choose, which would you take, and why? There is a healthy choice of Catcams, for example, but which one to take?

                        How about dry sump?

How strong are the diffs in the old quattro set ups the 016 boxes. Are they as strong as the gearbox's, 600bhp strong?

I have seen ATB diffs for the front diff but never the rear on a quattro. Apart from the torsen is there an aftermarket rear ATB diff?

So many questions and small print.

Sellholm - yes thats them in Sweden. They can supply full gearbox, diffs, driveshafts and lord knows what to custom spec if required. Big $$$$$$$$$$ though.

I do NOT think a Torsen or ATB diff at the rear is good for a drag-strip car. We know Audiman killed one with his 600bhp monster on the start line.

A lockable rear-diff is best - 01E or 016 - oh and 206 you'll be delighted to know that all these gearbox and diff combinations have variantions in F/R ratio. Most is 4.11 - but not everything.

On the world-beating quattro rally cars of the 80's they ran a LOCKED centre diff all the time with permanent 50-50 torque split. That was a custom dog box of some special brew - nearest to that is the 016 with lockable centre. I dare say an ATB option is available for the front diff on that from Quaife.

As for camshafts - thats what I was hinting about to Aron's post - he has shared some good insight there on his setup, but you would need to get details on his cam selection and maybe custom piston specs too in order to replicate his CR - or make a decision based on his results to do something different.

From what I've seen/heard, the rear driveshafts on 01E are the weakest link in the chain, but theres plenty of big power cars running on 01E.

On another point - I dunno how much gain there is with the oversized valves... Seems to me there is very little room for a considerable size improvement. I would like to see flowbench numbers on that - I imagine it would be an expensive operation.

Oh and talking of money... Investment in good instrumentation and logging for things like boost, IAT, EGT and AFR will be very well spent.
