    Mild track project.

    Evening all,
I have just bought back my straight bodied coupe quattro (type85) and would like to fit an 1.8t aeb engine in it. So far I have had trouble finding someone who has already done this conversion and wondered if anyone on here knows of it being done anywhere? I know the very thought of removing the 5cyl and fitting a 4cyl may make painfull reading to the purists of this forum but I figured you'd be less critical of the upgrade on here than on say the quattro forum or somewhere similar.
Anyhow the main problem we've come across so far is the clutch/gearbox issue and if this cannot be resolved without gearbox removal then the project will have to go in a different direction due to time constraints (I'd like it done for combe in october).
We know the engine fits a torsen box (type89) but that would mean changing too many other components.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Dan.

Is it that the bellhousing bolts don't line up? There were quattro 4 cylinder B3/4 cars so I'd be looking here as something like a 6a or 9a engine should be the same bolt pattern as the 1.8t.

Should be a good effort as the shorter, lighter 1.8t should make handling better and they'll produce 250bhp all day long an a K04 so should go some too.

    PICS!

Get some pics/info up as you go along, sounds like a good project and if your planning on having it up and running for combe i'll keep an eye on the track (what colour is it?)

Imo - as andy said the 4 cylinder is lighter and good power etc so brilliant for that, used to have a 4 cylinder type 85 when I was younger, kept up with the 5 cylinder all day long.

Not all the bellhousing bolts line up but I think that can be dealt with by some sort of conversion plate/spacer. The current problems are that the pilot bearing is fitted in the crank, as with the js thats coming out, but unlike a 5 potter the crank protrudes further into the bellhousing so the cq input shaft as is will 'bottom out' in the crank (the conversion plate should take care of this if one is required). Also I think the flywheel to use is the aeb one or a single mass version of it but I need to find a clutch plate to suit that fits the smaller diameter input shaft of the cq box. Quattro Dan and I are trying to find the parts to mock this up prior to the engine actually being removed so that when the car comes to bits its a relatively straight forward job to put it back together (yeah right!).

The car itself is a white one that looks pretty knackered but its a good solid shell with no sunroof. I've been round combe and croft in it on autometrix days but that was in 06 I think. On one of these days it was noticed by a forum member and was mentioned in a post but I dont think a photo made it on here. Speaking of photos I'll see about getting a pic or two on here and try and document progress if this project gets off the ground.

              Cheers,
              Dan.

Sounds like lotsof effort for cheap thrills. Get the box off a 4 pot B3/4 and start with that, everything else should bolt up, it would be more initial work but hopefully lots less faffing.

Thanks Carlos, found a few on there but think they were all into b3/4 or 4cyl type 85 so it looks like Andys right and its going to be a box swap and probably driveshafts, prop, rear diff etc. Which with all the good will in the world still isn't going to be done for combe so it looks like a change of tack for now.......

You'd be better starting with a B£/B4 in the first place and do something a little more traditional with the typ85, what about a 2.8V6 with a supercharger :mischeif:

Probably pick up a cheap quattro b3/4 that you can source all the bits from, would be good to do plus if you was lucky and got a cheap 20v you'd get longer ratios than the type 85 box but depends if its an out and out track day car.

I personally would spend the time and keep the type85 box, stronger, more controllable and means you don't have to swap everything, just the time to sort out getting it all bolted together.

Would love to see a project thread for it as you progress doing it

Just to bring this back up.

I was talking to alan from vagparts on friday when I went in for my monthly parts delivery, he was saying about how some of the americans are ditching the 5 cylinder and going over to the 4 cylinder idea like what you have, gains are there with less weight and same sort of power when modded well just easier for them to source.

We was also talking about the fact that afaik audi have not changed the pattern for the bellhousing on the gearbox from early cars to late so its easier to bolt up and there is also the fact that some of the later cab's came with the 4 cylinder engine as well

Have you made any progress on this or is the idea still in progress?
