    Another issue unfolds...........
After putting the car back together following the tensioner episode it seemed a little sluggish to me, ok i had been running around in our A3 for a week or so but still, something wasn't quite right. I rechecked all the timing marks and they were still spot-on and also replaced ther dizzy cap and fuel filter as they were of un-known age, still no good.
After much head scratching i 'phoned a friend' and shot him 20 questions, "Bring it over and i'll cast an eye over it, don't forget the beer and pizza" came the reply.
20 mile drive south to Stroud to hand it over to the expert saw her die about 200 yards away from his workshop, luckily it was down hill so let her roll.
"That's shot then" was the first comment i had, "Pizza?" was the second.
He found the dizzy was totally shot, and the wrong one for my car, "Hang on, there's an old Golf sat up in next doors unit, give me a sec"
10 minutes later and i was now the 'proud' owner of the worlds worst looking distributor ever known to man, but it worked, worked well.
After an hour and him chucking the dizzy in she burst into life, another hour of him checking, adjusting, driving, checking again saw her purring like she has never done so in my ownership, gone are the hesitations, slight misfires and rough running.
So this is what a 115 bhp 80 feels like, strange that, as i always thought it was dire.
Fuel economy is better, starts better, sounds better and also more importantly it drives a hell of a lot better.
Oh, the cost of him playing for well over 3 hours and a second-hand distributor?
1 chicken supreme deep-pan and 12 bottles of Becks, and i 'had' to use his XJR to go to Pizza Express too.
Lower arms, anti-roll bar bushes and drop-links next, may have a lowering kit on the way too, but more on that later.

Don't forget that you'll have about 130ftlbs from 2k to 6k rpm so it'll drive beautifully but won't feel that fast. Here's the torque curve off the engine (top one).

great news, what other problems did your mate find other then the shot dizzy?? The old 8v engines not too bad

As for the mention of 140bhp out of an 8v, that would be a pretty good figure, 16vs are 139 as standard, and will easily be tweaked for not too much to 170bhp

Other than the dizzy being the wrong one, and also the timing was way too retarded causing the plenum to become red-hot, he reckoned the cam was a tooth out too so he knocked it on one and wound it over by hand a few times to check for valve slap.

Once it was back together it felt so much different, seems the cam had been a tooth out for the time i have owned the car hence mis-fires and hesitation, along with the wrong dizzy it was a pile of poo. Moral here is simple, never trust the markings that are already there, just beacause they are there, don't mean they are right. For the record the markings had been painted on by the previous owner or maybe even before that.

Always check for TDC on no 1 piston and go from there, never fails, markings? Pah.

Quick up-date, S2 bumper now here, many thanks to Crawford-S2 for bringing it over in the back of one of the sweetest T4 vans i have seen in along time, looking good dude, looking good.
So it's off to the plastic welders next week and then onto the paint man.
Picked up a spare pair of mirrors yesterday so these will also be primed and prepped for top coating, boot spoiler has been primed aswell, will drop everything off at the same time to MD Auto's in Tewkesbury, best paint shop i have ever used and also the only paintshop i will use.
Electric window kit has been installed in the rear doors, just the front to do, this is all on the back burner though as the clutch in the A3 has decided to die, great.
Still after a 3 spoke wheel and also a full set of leather with door cards, i expect you lot are fed up of tripping over all those lovely cow-trimmed seats you have piling up in your garages. NOT
Also has anyone got a set of oe electric window switches for the drivers door, the bank of 4 with the rear door kill switch? Let me know

                    .

Are MD Autos doing the plastic welding as well as the paint as they're close to me in sunny Gloter?

No, will be using a place in Pershore for that, they make all our extraction systems at work and seem to know what they are doing, not sure if Steve at MD does any plastic welding, he does normal welding of course, never asked him about that as it goes, good painter though.
