1996 ABY S2 Coupe Modified Concours Project

Well, about time I started this thread up as there's a lot of work ahead of me and a lot of pictures to go with it...

Starting with how I picked it up from Phil - a well looked-after example but with a few 'rough edges' to tend to:

I didn't think this day would come for another couple of years, but my beloved Audi S2 Coupe is up for sale! The car has become surplus to requirements and will not be needed for the next two years. Rather than putting it into storage (and having to pay for the privilege), I have decided that I will sell her, at the right price. I have had a brilliant two years ownership and the online S2 forum has been very helpful.

If you are after a mint condition Audi S2 Coupe then look no further!

1996 N-reg (One of the last (no. 2832/3000) of RHD 6-speed ABY made)
    99k miles
    ABY 6-speed manual
    Regussa (dark) Green
    MOT'd until September 2008
    Taxed until February 2009
Full service history, HPI clear etc.
2x brand new Pirelli P6000's up front
Rear tyres still have about 4-6k miles left in them.
New clutch & Cambelt service at 82k miles.
Latest edition black leather interior with carbon fibre trim and standard airbag steering wheel
Original 10-disk Sony CD changer with radio/cassette head unit
AC, PAS, Electric SR/windows, remote central locking, multi-function trip computer & unused spare wheel

    Extras:

Up rated front brakes @~£600 (Dec '06): Porsche 911 (996 model) Carrera 2 callipers (black) with VAG Parts RS2 'big red' calliper brackets, EBC red stuff pads, 314mm A8 disks & Good ridge braided hoses

    Cobra alarm/immobiliser system (Jan '96).

Remote central locking kit (Jun '06) - can you believe a £30k+ car didn't have this as standard?!

    Also included with sale:

Rear matching Porsche 911 Carrera 2 callipers

    Touch-up kit

The service history includes 11 main dealer stamps, lots of receipts and full documentation of the Porsche brake conversion.

This car is mechanically sound: the 5-cylinder engine pulls incredibly hard in any gear and the 6-speed 'box feels absolutely brand new and rock solid. Its hard to believe that the crude 10v I5 from the early 1980's turned into something so smooth in its final incarnation. The Porsche front brake conversion is a common upgrade to S2's, but these are bigger and have even better stopping power than the RS2's standard Porsche fitments.

The leather interior and panels are unmarked and the genuine Audi floor-mats are also in very good condition. Once you've seen the dark carbon fibre trim, the wood interior of other Audi 80's just looks tacky! Also, the car has black roof lining and an electric sunroof with an automatic sliding cover – I am told this combination is rare!
The usual car park nicks exist, but there are no dents in the body and very few imperfections with the paintwork. You will not be disappointed with the way it looks.

I live in Loughborough (LE11) and work in Coventry (CV2). I can usually be home from work by 4.30pm but over the next few weeks I will be very busy and often away at the weekends. Therefore, if you would like to view the car during office hours then the car can be at Coventry (but I will not be driving it every day). Please call to arrange viewing rather than email. Strictly NO CANVASSERS

    Thanks for looking!

    Phil

The day I got it back, all the carpets came out and were scrubbed clean of dust (although they still need shampooing) and the car itself was washed, polished briefly and given a coat of Dodo Juice Purple Haze to give a little protection.

Whilst doing this I already started a list of what needed doing, starting with the air conditioning system that wasn't working. That was sorted by Keith at CoolCar (replacement hose on the low pressure return side to the dryer) and I took this week off work to make some progress.

Today being the first day off, I started with a full machine polish. No progress pictures I'm afraid, but I started with Menzerna Intensive Polish "Shirley" on an orange Lake Country pad, followed by Menzerna PO85RD Final Finish on a green Lake Country pad. This was then topped with a layer of Prima "Amigo" glaze and then Blackfire Midnight Sun Ivory Carnauba Paste Wax. The paint is significantly improved now, and looks much warmer for it. I also attacked the back bumper with a Black and Decker paint stripper gun as it had started to fade quite badly, beyond fixing with a good bumper gel.

Pictures in a moment, but this week's plan is to replace all of the exhaust bolts and gaskets, prior to it's trip to Charlie at ProSpeed in Cardiff to get the exhaust replaced for a stainless (but similar sounding item). I've also got stainless de-cats to go on.

Next month, it'll be a large order to VagParts as it needs the lower trims replacing on the door/arches, and the S2 badges and rear Audi rings replacing. At the same time the front Track Control arms will be changed as they're seized properly... Following on from that come around January it'll be a refurb for the 17" Avus wheels I've got, with a new set of tyres on them!

Ah, the joys of motoring! You can see the diesely Clio (blue one!) in the photos below that I bought to be able to afford the S2 - I dunno, sacrifices!!!

          Photos of today's work:

Also at some point this week Leatherique should be delivering me a couple of large bottles... After that's been done then I'll be putting up photos of the inside! Hopefully shampooed...

What do you mean when you say you attacked the rear bumper with a paint stripper gun?

careful application of heat (by whatever means) can help restore grey/faded trim

Nah, that's coming under next month's 'trim' order!

And yeah, as has been said regarding bumper trim - carefully apply (quite a bit of) heat to bring the oils in the plastic back to the surface.

Neighbour is a curtain twitcher - that's my house for sale (if anyone has money burning a hole in their pocket - it's been up for 18 months now and no offers!)

Looks like it's found a good home !

The car really landed on it's feet when you bought from the sound of it. Well wear.

( Obviously no disrespect intended to the vendor ).

                              Kind regards.
