What you say is true but when it comes down to it....

I guess everything is relative. One day someone here or in the States will find a economical, easy and tested way of doing this conversion. I can only wish.

****** 'ell Paul where do you get your petrol from I pay about £3.80-3.90 a gallon for normal unleaded after the recent price rises. That's about $5.44 per US gallon.

According to the news current record high prices in the States are about $1.77. So we still pay more than three times what we would in the US.

With an S2's appetite for fuel that's not good!

        Panzerwagen,

There must be an easier/cheaper way of doing the conversion.

fin, thanks for the suggestion. I like to go to a place and see the item before parting with any money though!

Dr H, I was led to believe that the octane rating of US fuel is not good. Their fuel comes in at 93 Octane I was told. I don't think that Super unleaded is available.

An American Gallon is a different size to the UK gallon! but not that much different.

          1.2 US gallon = 1 UK gallon = 4.5461 litre!

I pay 85.9 (fluctuates) for Shell Optimax in Diss (not far from home and on the way home anyway!) - which works out at £3.90 or thereabouts. Quite expensive enough, I think it's fair to say!

I managed to get some work done this weekend on my 5-stud conversion. I worked on the hub carriers. They were painted some weeks ago with Akzo Nobel PA10 primer and Akzo Nobel Duosolid 90, 2-pack paint. This has hardened off very nicely and left a tough glossy shine. It is well hard within 24 hours. I was lazy and brush painted them, it can be sprayed but I couldn’t be bothered to clean the gun for such small items.

The hubs had been plated and new bearings bought throughout. As the hub carriers had been lying round the back of an Audi breaker for heaven knows how long they needed some work. I decided to clean all the important holes in them. This was to remove corrosion and excess paint.

There were Three 6mm x 1mm pitch holes for bolting the brake stone guards in place. There are two 12mmx 1.5mm pitch threaded hols to bolt the callipers to (or in my case the calliper adapters to mount the Porsche Calipers) These were really bad!!

Finally I used two reamers, which are like a drill with lots of flutes (spirals). This will very accurately machine the inside of a hole so that is it 100% round. The ball joint pinch socket at the bottom was reamed out with a ¾ inch reamer. The ABS sensor hole is 18mm and had the same attention.

Once the hub carriers had been serviced they were as good as new. It was time to fit the bearings into them now. Below is a picture of a front hub carrier with all the taps and reamers in situ to show what’s what!

More to follow soon, back into the garage again after tea.

I remember being told the 5 bolt hubs were mad prices over there, we supply them @ 80 UK each hub or swap you for some gas! :-). Hub carriers @ 200 euro's for each front one.

There are fronts and rears. Mine are a different size, later S2's ( ABY?) had bigger rear bearings as well I think.....

The hub carriers seem to be the same for the Early S2 as my Coupe Quattro 20V.

The strut mounting holes in the hubs are a different sizes also, 12mm for early cars then they changed to 14mm

Wheel bearings are 75mm or 82mm. The dimensions depends on forged or cast housing.

you may see it from the outside:the small bearings have ONLY 90mm outerhousing.:the bigger housing are 100mm,BUT you may have only small bearing 75mm.these i have too mill out too 82mm bearing, ive made a tool to have the housing in the mill too do that,it worked perfeckt! then you have the orgin s2 hub.they are also 100mm outerhousing.no treble to fix the strout mount holes.then ive got the s2 bigg brakerotors in my vw stv syncro(quatro) with 2,6L 20v.......

Caterpillar, Will you post some pictures in the project section? It sounds like you have an interesting ride.

I am especially interested in the 2.6 litre 20V engine.

                          David.
