They should be marked 'top' or 'oben' IIRC.

Thanks. From the picture I can also make out that the second ring has the step pointing down. I knew I had read something about it somewhere, but couldn't remember where. Found it this morning on this site, very useful

Got the head back after a parts bath and I've had the coil and rocker covers blasted. I think they've made a decent job of them.

You can see how much I did to the combustion chamber, not too much.

More pics to post, maybe tomorrow.

Well, I was going to start rebuilding the head on Friday. I bought the gasket set from ECP a while ago and hadn't even opened it. First thing to use, the valve stem oil seals. Oh that's strange, there's only ten of them. Guess what, wrong gasket set.

Took it back and the lad behind the counter was helpful in trying to resolve the situation, but he did say that the set was the one listed for the ABY. Rocker cover gasket was a cork one with a cut out at one end and no spark plug gasket.

I'll post the part number tomorrow for future reference.

So he started pricing up individual gaskets. No problem, but he didn't have any of them in stock and he didn't have the water manifold gasket and o'rings. Back on Saturday to collect all but the inlet manifold gasket. Exhaust manifold gasket was bent so I have to wait for that aswell. Got everything else.

Sunday morning, about to start the head. Guess what, stem oil seals are too big. I can't f***in believe it. Part no for the ones supplied, 360660311. Might save someone else the same problems.

Can someone please tell me the part nos for the stem seals and the water manifold (gasket and o'rings). I'm at the point where I'll probably just go to the stealer and pay the price.

Anyway, crank's back in with two pistons so far. At least some progress.

        Alistair

That will teach you just go into any engine machine shop and ask for a victor reinz head gasket set O.E equipment and its right everytime i think cost was around £155 including head bolts

I guess it will. Well I'm at £95 plus the stem seals and water manifold gaskets. So a lot cheaper, but a lot more hassle. Oh, it is a victor reinz head gasket which was £18.95 plus the dreaded.

I think you may have been right. Spoke to the stealer before, water manifolds gaskets quite reasonable at about a fiver.

Stem seals, OMG . £3 each. Not sure if that's plus vat. £60 for stem seals. I actually haven't used any of the gaskets so far, so I may look for a refund and get a victor reinz set. Unless anyone has any cheaper suggestions for the stem seals.

you should be able to get victor reinz or other quality stem seals from an engine shop or motor factors for less than that.

Given up with ECP. Everything going back for a refund. Pete at QuattroCorner is going to bail me out with a Victor Reinz set at short notice. Thanks Pete, I'll post a proper thank you for all the bits you've supplied at a later date.

Bought some silver heat paint for the rocker cover etc. Didn't read the instructions properly, needs to bake to set. Tried it on the thermostat housing, turned out quite well after going in the oven at home. Rocker cover too big to go in oven. It's going in the snooker club oven tonight.

Starting to rebuild and it's been a while since the strip down so I will probably have to ask a few questions. First is, have I got the thermostat the right way round. I'm also assuming the o'ring goes on the pipe side, not the block side.

Quick pic of block after the paint job. Will post more as I progress.

                  Thanks

                    Big end caps

Started to tighten the caps on the big ends when, pop. Snapped one of the bolts/studs. I was tightening each side gradually and was going to tighten to 65nm which I'm sure I've seen as the torque setting.

                    Are these stretch bolts?

Checked with the stealer and they're just under £7 each. Does anyone have any alternatives? Is there an ARP version available and if so, how much does a set cost?

                    Need some help please.

I don' think they are stretch bolts but probably best not to reuse them, ARP do a kit, see here

If you buy from anywhere but 034 you will need to get one of the studs machined down as it's too long from ARP. You could try Aelred, I think he was trying to do a group buy a while back.

Thanks Andy, but they're the mains. I'm talking about the big end caps.

Phoned the local engine centre, they said they would be stretch bolts and they would be dealer only. I'd rather replace if there's a real doubt, but £70 for 10 bolts seems a bit excessive. Then again, we are talking stealer prices. I suppose you can't afford to take a chance. If one lets go then it's a wrecked engine.

If there's a better alternative, I'd like to know. Can someone confirm that the torque setting is correct at 65nm.

                          Thanks

                            NO...

Conrod bolt torque is 30Nm plus 90 degrees
If you wish to platsiguage the conrod bearings for clearance then just use 30Nm torque - nothing more.

Main bearing bolt torque is 65Nm

Just to make sure there are no terminology issues here... You have 12 (twelve) main bearing bolts and 10 (ten) conrod bolts.

PS - The conrod bolts are stretch type and do need to be replaced when removed. PITA I know at that price, but its a small price to pay versus a broken engine.

                              A lucky escape Alistair.
