On the 24th of November got to the last track day of the year at Crail.
It was pretty damp but all went well with no more clutch issues and cooling fan worked good.
The harnesses and steering wheel make such a difference.
Had a few hairy moments but found when it was sliding and drifting on all fours it was quite controllable

Some more wee jobs done on the 3b.

Trying to get the gear selector to work better I came across a mod to use part 893711615A selector joint but the fixing bolt to the gear selector rod is at a different angle.
Manage to knock out the 2 pins and replace the internal parts with original body and bolt back into position.
Made a bit of difference but selector still is a bit sticky on 1st and 2nd

    IMG_7908.jpg IMG_7911.jpg

Fitted new dished steering wheel and installed harnesses.
Adjusted seats, want to replace golf subframes with weld in bars to get the seat lower for best driving position.

Had a go at doing a windscreen banner which turned out nice.

Spal fan runs at 31amps so reckon its around 370watt.
With the bigger blades I reckon it must be as efficient as ABY .
Full speed on the 500 watt ABY is about 41amps
I would be interested to find out current draw on the ABY second stage as it takes care of most of the cooling.

thanks for the write up, its a little tight near the chassis leg like you say. Does the new fan have a lower current draw too?

    Track car cooling fan

With the problem of running the ABY fan at full speed only on 3b wiring I looked at options for cooling.
Option 1 was find a resistor and install full ABY setup (resistor could only be found on AT so same as NLA)
Option 2 was to fit 12inch Spal fan p/n 30102038 1640CFM fitted to the 3b metal cowl with welded tabs
Option 3 was 16inch Spal fan p/n 30102803A 2016CFM fitted direct to the radiator.
I wanted a more compact/lighter set up so I went for the 16inch and thought I would fit with a manual override switch to use at track days when queuing or cool down.

Swapped the thermostat control wires red/green with green/black to make use of J135 3rd stage relay with 4mm cable on first stage temperature switching.
Wired a manual control into my unused front fog lamp switch.
Maybe I can use F54 thermostat as a high temp warning.
Fan comes with Delphi 630 connector so ordered the female from ebay.

    IMG_7801.jpg3b fan switch mod.jpgIMG_7816.jpg

It works very well so far keeps the car at 90 when idling very similar to stock set up with cutting in and out times.
Using the override switch sees the temp dropping even more.
Only problem with the 16inch and the 80mm Aluminum radiator is the space near the chassis leg.
I will get away with using brackets on engine side and through radiator rods on the other.
Maybe later I can move radiator a bit more forward or modify chassis leg slightly.

Removed the silver carbon wrap as I made a hash of it and black looks alot better.
3M stuff is much nicer to work with

I have some braided hoses to fit front and back so was going to upgrade fluid to Motul 660 and bleed the clutch at the same time.
Want to try some brake cooling or intake air with fogslight ducts but chassis legs are pretty close.

Finally got the car on a track day at Crail.
First time for me on this track as only been at Knockhill in the past.
I only had some issues at the end of the day with running a ABY fan on full speed as I dont have a resistor fitted so it was a bit much for the 40amp fuse.
Then on the way home it was getting harder to select a gear and the engine was stalling at junctions until the clutch stopped working in Dundee.

Fearing something had gone a miss with the clutch/release bearing my mate and I decided not wait about for recovery services but lock the S2 and drink our way back to Aberdeen on the train.
Great end to a day out

The next day once sober I hired a trailer to get it the last 60 miles home where I gravity bled the slave cylinder and the clutch started working again?
After reading back on my own thread, I remember I had a bit too much pressure on the ezibleed and popped the fluid hose off the master cylinder filling the foot well with fluid.
Maybe just trapped air as I never pumped the pedal while bleeding or ive damaged clutch master cylinder seals?
looks like my stalling issue was due to a dragging clutch.

    fog light ducts.jpg

Fitted old fog light housings and removed number plate for the track.

S2 performed great on track and many people were interested in the engine and commented on how good it sounded.

    Update.

Not getting on very fast but a few little things done.

ABY - Got the sump baffle plate fitted and block in the car with new clutch.
Still need to get on with the head work and get it all back together.

    engine in.jpg

3b- Some small jobs off the list with modifying an V6 ECU bracket to get the ECU off the footwell.
Installed some new Lemforder front wishbones as my old ones were moving back and forth in the powerflex bushes, Think passenger side wishbone has had a bit of damage in the past so thought best to just buy two new ones.
Fitted an old set of bottom door trims to make it look a bit more respectable for MOT.

    ECU Bracket 1.jpgECU bracket 2.jpgLemforder wishbone.JPGdoor trims.jpg

Got the alignment done for track use and passed the MOT
Been out for a few blasts and its really quick but was stalling at junctions?
No fault codes and output test confirmed ISV working, changed out ISV with another one I had and seems a lot better.

ABY block back from machine shop ready for rebuild.
Made a start cleaning the sump and oil pump.
Plan to assemble the bottom end and fit in the car first leaving cylinder head for later.
Need a second sump gasket as only received one in the kit.
Plan to put everything back original with dual mass flywheel and PCV system.

Some more work on the 3b
Got a new slave cylinder installed and bled.
Fitted a vems round car running 14.7 and about 12.6 on a cruise.
Needed to get the electric windows working as the drivers side was moving but making some nasty noises like it was going to snap any second.
Opened up the motor gear plate, the wire was all twisted and plastic wheel was toast.
Got a replacement cable and wheel on ebay so turned out to be an cheap fix.
The passenger side was not moving but was getting 12v and the motor was heating up so it was still alive, removed the two screws holding the motor and the motor jump in and out on the worm gear.
After that it started moving the window and freed off.
