    LWB sportquattro racecar

well i've been lurking round these parts for a while now so i thought i'd better start a thread on my project. First off i live in new zealand where audi's are rare as rocking horse crap so most of the parts i've had to import. I bought a very clean and straight 1987 kv quattro coupe locally (well over 1000kms away) and quickly stripped it out. I bought an aan in from the states along with all the rebuild parts thanks to 034 motorsport. I'm aiming for 400-450 hp so i went with a new garret 3071 which i sourced locally. I then moved onto the brakes which i went for a set of mitsibushi evo 5-10 330x32 rotors and nissan skyline 4 pot calipers. The car came with a set of koni internally adjustable shocks which i had rebuilt but will probably end up replacing with koni double externally adjustable shocks and I built a set of adjustable spring platforms with king springs. The cage went in but i am going to modify it to pick up the rear subframe mounts shortly (as soon as i can convince my boss to take the car to work)

In the meantime i had sourced a set of A2 quattro guards and rear bumper locally and had to bring in the bonnet, grill, front bumper, and rear wing in from sweden (with help from zlobo off this forum - big thanks mate!) Lots of other things have been done, like an ali fuel tank, boot mounted radiator, balance bar brakes etc but this is already turning into a novel so i'll spare you for now.

The next "great idea" i had was to bin the 016 drivetrain and replace it this a 5 speed subaru drivetrain. The advantages are i have a mechanical front and rear LSD and a variable viscous centre LSD (DCCD) and i plan to install a dog box gearset once its up and running and i'm happy with the ratio's . so far i have the box and motor mated together and mounted on the original engine mounts but this is an ongoing saga........

Nice car you have there. I like the A2 kit better then a SWB UrQ. Handles better as well in the corners.
Keep those picture coming please. Will you be using a stand-alone ECU, or just Motronic?

The 5 speed subaru box is piss week , you will bust it in no time , they brake quite easily at 350 hp and thats not with a high torque audi motor just a scooby with 350hp.

i agree i will bust the standard subaru 5 speed but i have the type r 4.44 close ratio box and diffs which is a bit stronger than a nomral wrx and if i put in the dogset they are rated to about 500 hp. the other option is i just upgrade to a 6 speed which is plenty strong enough, but i'd only do that if i could get a dccd box, and they are HEAVY! i don't know what an audi 6 speed weighs, but a subaru weighs like 70 kgs! but either way they are all just straights swaps now, no modification needed so i can address that later.

I will be running it off a locally made standalone called "Link" cause everyone uses them down here, hence we have a lot of good tuners available.

But coming from NZ, why not swap the driveline for an older Nissan GT-R version? Fully controlled 4wd diffs with the ATESSA system, easy to get parts like a custom sequential box there in the southern dragster-addicted countries...

              Lovely car though!

i wanted to stay with a transaxle rather than a transfer case, the subaru 6 speed offers active diffs but you need to install all the wheel sensors, g force sensors etc which could be an issue. i might have a line on a dccd 6speed so i'll let you know what happens. and i'll throw up some more pics shortly.

This could be a first... A quattro with scoobaru drivetrain - its different - I give you that... and it can't have been easy so hats off to you for taking your own road there with that and a few other unusual options. Nice to see something different - the 'LWB' quattro is so much easier on the eye than the shorty - but then the shorty wasn't built to look good !

i must admit i'm not the first to do the subaru conversion, theres a guy in new zealand called andrew hawkeswood who has an s1 that has been subaru'd although he went about it a totally different way and fitted an entire subaru floorplan, subframe, box, suspension and suspension turrets to a shortened gt coupe. I wanted to retain as much as possible and just use the box and diff. The reason i have deviated from the status quo of an audi 6-speed, porsche brakes etc is due to the availability of euro parts "down in this part of the world". Most cars on our roads are Japanese or australian and at least the japs have moved on from pushrods!

Well OK - either way you are creating some sort of Audi 'quattreza' - I donate that label to your cause and this project

I'm not a big fan of the Subaru myself, but I do have a lot of respect for what they have done in the WRC arena and no doubt they have produced some very quick road cars that have more sophisticated drivetrain and handling. I dunno what reliability is like compared to 'bomb proof' quattro drivetrain - unless you are running very high torque levels... In which you are into sourcing motorsport spec gearboxes etc - which as you say would easier sourced from the Scooby scene in your part of the world.

Good project - I like it cos its different.

so i got that six speed dccd box from a version 8 sti wrx. i also had to buy an engine crane to move it around cause it's big! i threw it in on the weekend and it fits ok - the only issue is it has a few small sumps hanging off the bottom which sit quite low. I think a big bash guard might be on the cards!

6 speed are stronger but the ratios are too short. lots of shifting going on. subaru did their homework a bit here. they moved the spy from porsche to Audi to look at the 6 speed. its similar, same clutch size etc. id be looking to fit the full sti setup really brakes, arms. they are all superior to the audi ones.

a 5 speed will hold up if you put proper cogs in there. better from dragging. IIRC andy forest runs a 5 speed and low 9's.

most subaru drivers would love the strength of a quattro setup.

looking good. its a beast of a box to lift. you will need the rear 180 diff otherwise theres an explosion on the cards.

yeah the main reason for the subaru gear is not a strength thing, its to get some decent controllable diffs. i want to retain 16 inch wheels so i can't use the subaru brembos and the multilink subaru front end would require me cutting most of the chassis rails off, then i may as well tube front and go double wishbone. but....... you have to draw the line somewhere otherwise the cost of these sort of mods go crazy!
