Yeah definitely recommend you do that, benefit of hindsight I would have done that to mineLeave a comment:

Sorry to p*ss on your chips, but I agree with Greg. Unless the bearings are really knackered they probabley won't make a noise, what could have happened is they could have got 'scuffed' and now, the more you run it the more it will damage the bearing up to the point where it over heats and welds itself to the crank, taking the rod and crank with itGOOD NEWS!!!
Managed to get a pipe made at a local hydraulic place and bridged the cooler. After it started there was a stuck tappet but after running on a high idle for 15-20 mins it cleared. There's no real sign of any damage with oil temps of 90-95c I was seeing about 2.1 bar and there are no nasty noises through out the rev range.
Hopefully I've been lucky so now just to get the car up to my unit so I can start the strip down.
Also got some steering arm bushes off Bambridge to add to the list parts to be changed!
I'd pull the sump off, you can do this with the engine in, and have a look at the bearings. A pain I know, but it could save you a much bigger bill 2 weeks down the line.Leave a comment:

Be very careful, this is what I thought on mine. 150 miles later the big ends let go on one of the rods and bent the rod and knackered up the crankLeave a comment:

Another small update....
The s2 is still sitting outside my house waiting to go up to the unit as its taking me long than I thought to get the golf in a suitable state to move it into storage.
I've slowly started collecting parts ready for the rebuild so that as soon as I start it wont take as long.
Got a block coolant pipe off rusty and set of standard avus alloys from bilko0795 that will replace the ones that got damaged on a friends car when I lent them to him and the car caught fire 2 weeks later.

Just a small update...
Ive decided to take the s2 off the road for the winter to give it a small overhaul so my mk2 track project will have to be delayed for awhile and go into storage
to make room for the s2.
On the other hand I managed to pick up a cheap daily run around...
1996 1.9 TDI with good service history, little bit scabby but can't complain for the price I payed.

Thanks for the offer Greg, no my cooler has both outlets on the front, I managed to by-pass it quickly today, I was able to get good pressure but I still not convinced as there was still noise from the engine so next step is to get a second hand cooler and then try.Leave a comment:

Yup still paying price at moment
I may have an oil cooler to suit yours in mint condition. Does you cooler have an inlet/outlet on front and the other on the back?
Drop me a PM because it wouldnt fit mine, and think they changed the design very slightly on later cars.Leave a comment:

anorak
If the car is facing uphill, then the steering should be set as it is in the photo, if facing downhill then you turn the wheels into the curb
- good practice when driving an s2 as the handbrake is usually rubbish

haha actually the recovery driver left the car the other way around nose to nose with another so I had to turn it around.Leave a comment:
