    add's new project....

Hello all,i've decided to post up my "new" project, for my own motivation as much as anything else
I've owned my 93' aby coupe for a little over a year now,and to be fair it's been one
    disaster to the next,here's why...
I bought it last september with the intention of keeping it relatively standard and just enjoying it from one weekend to the next, which went well for all of a month.
On my way home from the shop one night the car died, closer inspection revealed the the crank sprocket had sheared it's key, resulting in 10 bent valves-gutted doesn't describe the feeling
After much swearing and tearing out chunks of my hair i decided to grit my teeth and fix it,two weeks later and all was as it should have been,at least for a while
The car developed a bad tappety noise which was getting progressively worse, also the oil pressure was all over the place.I remembered that while i was repairing the head i had the rocker cover shot blasted and powdercoated, along with my brothers (he was doing an xe conversion on his astra at the time).
To cut a very long story reasonably short,it appeared that there was blasting grit inside the engine, the only explaination i have come up with is that when it was blasted it was not degreased correctly (if atall),meaning the blasting grit would stick to the oil and grease. But hey what would that matter if you cover it in powder coat
So the grit that was washed out into the oil siezed all the lifters solid, killed the oil pump and subsequently totaled the engine
At this point i gave up,binned the lump and sulked for a good few months...until now.

Luckily work has picked up a lot this year meaning i now have the money to get this mess sorted out once and for all
I have an engine on it's way and have started to collect a few choice upgrade parts:mischeif:
The spec is to be determined at the moment but want to be somewhere near 400hp with as much torque as the stock rods will safely handle.
This is how it is at the moment

    more piccies to follow

      First of the parts..
Southbend clutch courtesy of marc at efi express

      7A flywheel...may need a skim

Thought i'd give one of these new forge 'splitter' valves a go,similar in principle to those turbosmart dual port jobbies-but at nearly half the price

Also picked this up,it may be a little on the small side, although surface area is the same as an aby pretty much but has more volume..we will see

Also have an 044 fuel pump coming soon, also looking into injectors,RS2 items may be upto the task, either that or 'apple' greens for extra headroom.
In the next week or so i should be ordering all the coolant hoses aswell as what i'll need for all the induction pipework
Then it may be time to look at turbos
I've also been plugging away at a few other jobs.
The interior has been on a diet, also got some new seats
I have Big Lee M to thank for those

do the rods if you can

its best not to push the standard rods near there limit or you could be back to square one and that will pi## you off

            It's what i'd call 'compact'

I've been toying with changing the rods, the only problem is if i do...it will escalate.
I think it shouldn't be an issue provided it's mapped accordingley afterall you have to draw the line somewhere, plus there the extra expense, rods, shells, head studs, gasket the list goes on.

Small update, sourced a second hand 044 fuel pump complete with modified basket.
Slipped that in this weekend-quick and easy so went to the pub
Hoping to make some progress on the engine front soon, will be getting a price for skimming the flywheel aswell.
I've also had a stroke of luck,i've managed to aquire some garage space (complete with pit) to keep the car until i can afford to put a roller shutter door in my workshop, the best thing is that the garage is 20 yards away from said workshop. No more crawling around on a muddy drive
I'll get a few pics when i next pop up...

couple of pics to keep the thread fresh(apologies that they are abit crap)
Piling up all my tools and 'car stuff' in this part of the workshop, want to get a roller shutter door in there when funds allow:

and through to the next room...

^this is going to be the machine shop, lot of work still to do(another project-oh joy!),roof leaks, floor is ****ed,the list goes on
Looking to get the s car moved into it's new home before christmas, also should hopefully be picking the new lump up in a week or so,then it should really start taking shape

Right,i now have the most important part of the project in my posession, went to pick it up from Gav on wednesday,9 hours and 540 miles later it's in the workshop..

I've been over to the workshop today to make a start, basically the plan is to give it a good clean up and a lick of paint, plus change a few parts along the way if needed.
sofar the turbo,em and wastegate are removed, the cam cover is off,has been prepped and primed for a lick of paint.Going to change the cam cover gasket as it appears to leak a little, also have new plugs to pop in.
I'm swapping the engine mounts for a pair i cleaned up and painted a while ago for that extra bit of bling
Spent about three hours cleaning the block off, then ran out of degreaser, still need to pop a couple of parts off to clean and prep behind anyhow, back to it tomorrow

Also got hold of some 440cc injectors, one less thing on the list!
So,should get the flywheel sorted soon,i've set the wheels in motion(so to speak)
to get the car over there ready for it's heart transplant, that just leaves the rest of the parts to get hold of:
                        Turbo
                        EM
                        silicone coolant and ancilliary hoses
                        parts for induction pipe work
                        exhaust parts
                        Brake upgrade
                        another ecu
                        oil cooler
also going to upsize the intercooler to be on the safe side (it will come in for the next little project i have in mind:mischeif
                        Thats all for now

Oh,also managed to snap two studs getting the manifold off
Lucky for me that theres enough of them left to remove them with relative ease....
                          never a dull moment eh?

Not always easy to keep the faith.
Good luck with it. I'm sure it will be worth it.

It's starting to look much cleaner/tidier now.been hard at it all weekend and i'm fairly pleased with the results considering i haven't completely gone to town

should hopefully have the car in the garage in a couple of weeks meaning it can be fitted, need to start collecting the rest of the parts in the meantime
