I've been toying with changing the rods, the only problem is if i do...it will escalate.
the thing with changing the rods now while the head is off you will hope never have to worry about taking the head off again.....I was in the same boat and was finally convinced that it would avoid any un-due stress to the stock rods.....and it doesn't have to escalate now but in the future you might want to..... and being on this forum leads to such things.....
just my 2p's worth....and good luck with the build....
Oh,also managed to snap two studs getting the manifold off
Lucky for me that theres enough of them left to remove them with relative ease....
never a dull moment eh?

The head is staying on,just to keep things simple and cost to a minimum, which is also the reason for leaving the rods be.I have settled on a goal power wise and think rods would be unecessary,if i decide to go for silly power in the future i will get a proper bottom end built from the ground up (with my spare block and crank),i think the stock bottom end is stronger than it gets credit for,i would hazard a guess that most failiures come from pre detonation and/or poor mapping...we will see either way
It's a love/hate relationship with the S2,i love it,it hates me
Yes,it was the exhaust manifold studs,to be expected i suppose, doesn't harm to have a little moan thoughshould be pretty straight forward to sort out-hopefully

Minor update.
The engine is pretty much ready to fit bar the flywheel, managed to get the snapped studs out ok,also fitted the injectors.
Should be picking up the flywheel tomorrow, which has ended up costing twice as much as first expected due to both pins on the friction side snapping, although they aren't needed the machine shop still need to remove the bits that are left in order to skim it,
apparently because they are hardened they need to be 'spark eroded' out
Going to push on trying to get the car into the garage.
Have also sourced a turbo, just need to get some beans together to pay for it
Not easy with the weather as it is,especially when you're supposed to be building an extension
stay tuned

The extension does include the garage too does it? What turbo have you opted for?
the extension is to do with work,as it is at the moment-no work(weather)-no money-no shiney bits
My workshop is literally 10 metres away from the garage, just need to get the s car settled in
Turbo is k26/27 hybrid, bang for buck i think it should take some beating:mischeif:

Thought i'd bring this up to date...
Although christmas has taken it's toll on my bank balance i've finally been able to get some money together for a few parts
Got hold of a larger intercooler, some materials to make
a cross member, also a few random bits and bobs, nuts, bolts etc.
Ordered most of the parts i'll need for the intake pipework today, and come thursday i'll be ordering most of the bits for the exhaust as well as hopefully recieving the turbo.
I'm looking to get the car in the garage at the weekend and start to get really stuck in.(engine is literally ready to drop in-it's even attached to the hoist)
I'd really like it done by the back end of spring, which to be fair is more than do-able considering there aren't that many more parts to buy
only:
Back box,200cpi cat
EM,gaskets etc
replacement rear discs and pads
front brakes (uprated)
Random hose clamps
Silicone maf hose
Ecu
oil cooler
and a few random bits and pieces no doubt,so maybe another ÂŁ1600 or so and the wallet draining will stop (at least to a degree)
I'll post some pics up at somepoint soon...

Hi, are you going to put on a new timming belt, tensioner & water pump ? - it's easier with the engine out & on a stand - if any of them let go, you will be back to square one
Audi S2 Coupe 1995 VW Passat GL5 (hatch) 1986 VW Passat GL 1.8 (saloon) 1986 Carrera Subway 8
Small accumulation of parts...
unfortunately i couldn't get the car car moved at the weekend, the guy doing it didn't
have his flatbed truck available due to a call out,i declined his offer of a spec lift
So this weekend it is,i can finally get the engine in
Since i'm stuck for what to do i made a start on the crossmember brackets:
The cross member itself will be made from 1"x1" mild box section,i may also add a couple of strengthening plates if necessary, but again i need the car at the garage to carry on with it....
Roll on saturday

Right,a much needed update...
Moving the car proved to be a PITA,due to a fairly unreliable transport company,so the car only landed at the garage last weekend, however,i've put my time to good use...
So the engine is now in..
The cross member is done and the intercooler is mounted...
I've spent today getting the charge pipes made, mounted the turbo on an old exhaust manifold to get some idea...
Most of the pipe work is now done, just need to pressure test the finished product and give them a lick of paint
So far so good...the only problem being the clutch slave cylinder seems to have given up on lifeI'll be picking up a new one tomorrow however so that will be a job for next weekend.
The next thing on the list is the exhaust manifold aswell as the last few bits for the exhaust system, after that i'ts odds and ends to get it to a running stage......i'm actually starting to enjoy this project again
Till the next time

Just so you know the clutch salve is an absolute b!tch of a job to change with the clutch in place!
Emjoy
I thought as much
If i had known at the time i would have done it before the engine went in but assumed (stupidly) that all was still well with it
I'm going to rope my brother in for assistance/do it for me to save some headache
