well, i have seen a couple of chipped RS2 running anything between 1.7 to 1.9bar of boost and the amount of gunk you see on the MAF tells you that the system gets more inadequate the more boost you are running. Maybe for a stock turbo and stock boost things are ok regarding what OEM regards as 'normal wear'

With the experience i have, if the engine/head could run more than 100K kms without a serious rebuilt and this is now needed because of too much blowby not having anywhere to go, i believe that at least a simple cyclone that returns blowby to the sump and a mod to allow the camcover to breathe better is definitely a +

Sometimes these issues are not noticable until you reach a point where you dont pass emissions, or you are adding too much oil.nevertheless the engine seems to be running ok(though not as good/down on power).

Issues would be piston ring wear, low compression, valve stem seal wear and then on, anything that the delivered turbo pressure can find way to wear(i dont know, valve wear and improper sealing(??)) etc.

I'm going to start this breather stuff for people who need to get up to speed on same, (me), in a new thread as it's Ross' thread.

      My fault.

      Thanks.

...a few hours in the garage, and she's starting to come together. Breather is in, coolant system is in bar the 3 hoses that connect to the rad. Turbo lines on. IM on.

A couple of issues - missing Inlet Manifold bolts, found all but two of them

Also no bolts for the oil inlet & return on the turbo

                A bit of an update:

Engine is still not ready for an attempted start

I've been plugging away at a few jobs each night, spending more time looking for the right size bolts and then going to screwfix/halfords/b&q etc to find an instantly available replacement...

Last night I hit an issue where:
                (1) my adjustable wouldn't quite make 27mm
                (2) I was missing an 0-ring for the A/C pipes
                (3) My recon aircon compressor has only 4 threads left out of 12 - I'm gonna clean up the threads nicely and give it a go, but I can't see that holding 200psi in the system

Or I might just leave it off and tackle that as 'phase 2' later in the summer, and replace the turbo at the same time.

If I can adjust the linkage tonight (can't get 2nd) and get the cross member on (note to self, one of the bolts snapped, gonna have to try and drill it out) then I just need to add fluids and a few intake hoses before I can attempt to start her... hopefully something on this build will go in my favour and that won't be a drama (or complete lack of anything, as I fear)

If she starts - then i bed in rings tomorrow evening, get summer rubber swapped on Saturday morning, and come up for a few hours. If not - I'll bring the Golf

                      And the verdict is...

I spent an hour on the car at midnight, I managed to fit the new A/C pipe with my new, bigger adjustable only to find the pipe from the front wing is ~1mm wider than the jaws

Not happy with defeat I decided to unplug injectors and see if I could crank the engine a few times.

Hook up battery, 11.8V - not bad - 3rd party alarm went off, quickly disarmed it, key in - deactivated immobiliser and got lots of dash lights... good sign... turned the key and nothing. I figured there is no point going on if I can't even get any life into the starter motor.

This morning I'm thinking (1) I'm so damn tired and (2) why did I not just stick with the head rebuild........

I might trade a saturday @ the Dyno day to a 'work on the car' day and attempt to get up there for a couple of hours on Sunday. I need to check the earth to the block and the connections on the starter before I write it off. Progress as it stands:

Also check the wire to the starter, small one with a spade connector. From memory there are two terminals on the starter and its not very obvious which one it goes on, i think its the upper of the two.
