Audi 80 Quattro (Type 89) - AAN Engine Conversion

I basically have a few Audi's and tonnes of parts lying around none of which is doing anything, so the plan is to put the 2.2 20v Turbo engine (AAN) from one of the URS4's into the 80 Quattro.

I bought a 90 Quattro for all the 5 cylinder gubbings, engine mounts, radiator, brackets, flywheel, etc so I have all those parts.

While discussing the pros & cons of 034motorsports standalone system on Motorgeek.com, Tonks4x4 piped up and asked why I didn't just buy an ABY wiring loom and plug it in, he went on to tell me that it plugged in at the fusebox, realy panel, instrument cluster, ecu then everything on the engine side........I was delighted, it's saved me a fortune!

Here's the first msg he sent me, saves me typing it...

Now gearboxes, I have the original 5 speed gearbox from the 6a, I also have the 6 speed boxes in the URS4's.
Was there something about the 6 speed box being bigger/wider and possibly not being able to fit in the transmission tunnel?
Also I think the 6 spd box has a small subframe on the URS4....
What gearbox would you recommend fitting? and whats involved? eg - clutch, flywheel, etc

    Cheers,
    Leigh
Ok, I'll start with the gearbox. The AAN will bolt directly to it however you will need to source a 3B or 7A flywheel and clutch. So it is single mass instead of dual mass but still has the timing pins for running the motronic.

Don't panic it will more than handle the power up to 450bhp with a good quality clutch.

However in my experience if you want an easy straight forward install of your engine and so that it looks stock under the bonnet. I would suggest that you source an ABY inlet manifold, water rail, fuel rail, and rocker cover. This will allow you to run a standard size radiator and all the plumbing is much easier. Alternatively you will need to have a custom radiator made with a slim line custom fan and quite a bit more home made plumbing.

The ABY loom will plug and play into everything you have but it is a Pain in the **** as you pretty much have to have the entire interior out to run the loom correctly across the bulkhead behind the heater box and carpet. If you convert all your otherbits to ABY spec then there is no alteration required to any of the wiring. If you stick with AAN setup you need to extend the wiring to the MAF and the throttle position switch as they are located on the opposite side of the engine bay.

You will also need to fit a set of 5cyl clocks to get the rev counterto read correctly.

Hope that helps for a starter.

If you want to ask questions over the phone you can call 01623 452885 in office hours

    Many thanks

I have all the 5 cylinder bits an bobs out of the aforementioned 90 quattro, radiator, fans, brackets, trim, etc, so if I get all the s2 bits you mentioned I could just mount the standard 90 radiator.

    Is the plumbing custom?

Apart from the ABY inlet manifold, water rail, fuel rail, rocker cover and 5 cylinder clocks are there any more bits required?

I can't remember the differences between the Typ 89 80 and the facelift model, but would the s2 clocks fit directly in the dash would mean that the computer etc would work....

    Thanks again,
    Leigh
If you have a 7A donor that is perfect, you can use all the bracket work off that to mount your power steering pump and alternator for the standard fit look again. All the 7A plumbing and pipework will fit spot on.

You will also need an ABY PCV system which is the set of breather pipes around the back of the block, but you can chuck something together to get you by. You will also need a different dipstick tube but this is only being picky....

Oh and you will need the boost pipe that runs down the side of your head only £5 to £10 when they come up for sale.

The trip computor will not work without extra wiring but can be done if you are competent at reading wiring diagrams.

So I put up ads in the wanted section and got a reply from avants2turbo, so I have acquired a complete ABY wiring loom complete with fusebox and relay panel, ABY metal boost pipe, ABY cam cover & the pcv system.......so great!

Now here's the burning question avants2turbo has also offered me a 3b inlet manifold, which I'm told is basically identical to ABY but it flows better.........I asked Tonks4x4 if it would work instead of the ABY, but he replied with "I am not sure if the throttle cam touches the rocker cover"......now I don't know anything about this, does anyone know whether it will work or not?

    Cheers,
    Leigh

no the 3B IM wont work with the ABY cam cover, ABY one has more space so it clears the cam cover.

I thought that the battery had to be relocated to the boot for some reason, but you've managed to jam it in there at the bulkshead, so now I know it can be done.

As you can see from this one the RHS of the engine bay hasn't really changed...

Mr Tonks did a lovely job of the conversion...

No I see that, looks very OEM.

Did you stick with the 90 gearbox?

                          Hows it go through changes?

Yes, same gearbox and it copes well with the extra power as its been chipped and 2.75" exhaust, so sounds good too...

And yes it goes well, suprised quite a few 'fast' cars...

Was thinking about a new set of wheels, what do you guys think of these....

........Compomotive TH2's, did a quick photoshop, the photoshop is done over the top of the 16" RS's so it's as close to 16's as possible.

Anyone tried a set of 17's on a B3 before?

I'm wondering what width I can go to, ideally don't want to get into arch modification!
