    shed some weight

i have been searching for the last couple of days info on how much and where from i can cut weight and to be fair seems to be a trade secret.

If some one could bless me with a link to where i can get this type of info pics/diagrams would be fantastic i will be having a weld in multipoint cage. but need to be able to plan my attack on this shell for when i move into my unit in about 6 weeks.

It's no secret - remove anything you don't need, move anything you can to the rear end and upgrade to lighter parts wherever possible.

    remove all interior
remove all underseal and sound deadening
remove all unnecessary wiring & electrics
ditch hydraulics & run electric PAS pump or EPAS column
    lexan windows
composite wings, bonnet, doors, roof & rear quarter panels
    composite / alloy floorpan sections
    tubular wishbones
    alloy / composite fuel cell
    move rad to the rear
    lightweight battery
    composite prop shaft
alloy fixings for everything non critical
    ceramic rotors
IIRC the works cars used titanium strut tubes & maybe driveshafts too?
    mag wheels
custom mag gearbox & diff casings?
    custom alloy uprights?

the list goes on, how deep are your pockets?

i mean in the way of cutting from the shell i.e if the cage becomes integral to the strength of the chassis, can i loose some material else where like inner panels on rear quarter and so on also perspex windows

Check out terrybullwon's build thread, that's had a lot of work done to the shell.

I was told that the coupe shells are strengthened inside the sills, so that's something to look into if you're adding a proper cage.

me and Kit has a good go at one with a 9" grinder recently. There about about 4 different gauges of steel on the shell, depending on what part it is. The sills are not very heavy but the floorpan and chassis rails are pretty damn thick!

ok that looks good i assume with caution i will need a different steering column.

has already got different steering wheel and boss not snap off.

so will have a look into this as yet unsure if dash will stay in have a mass of planning and calculations to see what is viable and at which stage.

Not sure that you'll need a new column, as it's designed to compress when the cables attached to the gearbox pull on it.

just to confirm about dash comment i mean unsure if will run original dash as lust after a digi display. will need to be removed for cage to be fitted i want to produce myself pigeon poo inc,

just not sure about a fiberglass pod, have some experience from when i adapted a boat a few years back, i would cut and shape foam then lay sheet over top spray resin, then use a solvent to melt the foam insert.

in my book these things dont seem to bad but i begin to explain my intentions i am thinking i should invest in a good box and a clean blanket so at least my first weeks of my special brew diet will be less degrading.

You dont need to change anything if you remove the pro con ten, I just took mine out, unclipped the cable at the steering columb and cut the cables at the seatbelt bases.

without seeing the unit myself i am wondering

because as i imagine it to be, a splined telescopic column the only additional weight will be the cables and dare i say pulleys as i believe this to be a simple mechanical process will the weight of the cables be substantial enough to stop me having to replace my teeth as i do not intend on bending this car but i am a mere punk kid.

if you are serious with this project then the pro-con is irrelevant. You will probably be using a non-standard steering column anyway as you will want to move the seat back to improve weight distribution
