my 82 Coupe GT 5E Conversion to Quattro

    Hi Guys,

    Firstly Great Forum.
    I live in South Africa.
I bought a 1982 Coupe GT 5E 4years ago, it had been standing for 12yrs prior to me buying it.
I since have rebuilt the and have done the following:

    Remove rust
    Respray car
change interior colour from blue to black.
powder coat front subframe and rear axle black and fitted polyurethane bushes all round,
refurbished the front brakes, new discs, pads and stainless hoses.
converted rear brakes from drum to discs and stainless steel hoses.
Had the head off the engine and rebuilt.
    starter motor and alternator rebuilt.
14" mags which came with the car refurbished and pirelli P6000 fitted.
    All back to stock.
Had the radiator serviced and resprayed.
also painted up the engine and cleaned up everything under the bonnet.

I`ve attached some Before pics, from when I bought it.

The 5pot was running beautifully and really sounded awesome.
until one night it started misfiring and became undrivable.
turned out to be a broken ring.

Figured this would be a great time to make it into something special.

so I got hold of a AAN engine

Hours and hours of polishing went into the cam cover and coil cover. think it was worth it.. but might still get a carbon one.

I imported a exhaust manifold from germany.

The manifold will get a bracing bracket made.

I have since bought a 6 Speed Manual gearbox and a rear diff from a URS4, which with some fabrication will make this fit the GT.

          QUATTRO!!

have bought another subframe, same as the front, this is very similar to the one on a UR Quattro, but doesnt have a diff mount on, this will be modified to fit the diff.
Im also using front struts and the rear, so they will be the same allround.

The struts are currently at a suspension specialist in Cape Town being converted to Coil overs.

286mm Discs and 6 piston brakes are on order.

Got hold of a set of 15" compomotive wheels :-) they are black for now.. will have them sprayed silver when I`m done.. no point spraying them now. if they are probably gonna get scratched.

Also fitted Bridgestone 225-50-15 Semi slicks.

Will run a standard turbo and injectors for now.. just want to get everything running first.

I plan on fitting a VEMS standalone ECU.
This is a ongoing project, which I hope to have completed in the next 2years. Would of liked to have finished sooner but other priorities (wedding, new kitchen etc) need attention 1st.

Choose any b2/3/4 quattro rear running gear and rear flor(you will need rear axle mounting points) as a donor. You will find a quattro donor with parts you are interested on it less than 500 eur.
That should be the most cheap way and the most"OE"

would loved to of had just bought a rear small chassis quattro as a donor.
Here in South Africa, the older quattro`s are very rare.
There`s probably only maximum of 10 Ur Quattro`s here.
and to my knowledge about 4 Coupe GT`s around.

I will be cutting the rear floor pan out with a plasma cutter, but first brace the car up inside.

Will make a mounting frame for the rear subframe out of Square Steel tubing. This will be strong.

Gonna assemble the complete rear end and rest it on a trolley, then lower the car on a hoist till it is positioned correctly, shocks fitting in their mounts etc.

Will then be triple checking all the measurements and that its all square.

The car is gonna get a roll cage fitted too, this will help strengthen the chassis aswell.

              It can be done..

I`m also planning on getting a front spoiler and flared wheel arches from Thomas Schmidt.

But find him to be very difficult to get hold of, he doesnt reply to emails.

You don't need ur quattro as a donor.ANY b2,b3,b4 quattro will help you, sedan or coupe.

                        I Hear what your saying..

The B2/ B3 or B4 quattro`s weren`t available in South Africa, the cab or sedan is super scarce in this country.

and shipping costs from the UK are expensive for such a large item.

I`m confident that I`ll get it right with out it and make it look decent too.

only the B4 cabriolet was imported here, you dont find them at scrap yards and the price for a running one is too high just for the rear end..

                              thats the problem.

There are a few B4 coupe`s around, Like maybe 10 in the country aswell, they all have 2,8 V6 Quattro`s.. but no breakers have any. and also car like that 2nd hand is in R55000 which is about 5500 pounds.

I already have the subframe which I`ll be using.. just dont have a donor floor pan.. which is why I`ll get this fabricated.

Car will be fun once its done tho.
