    ABC coupe

    hey guys,

i'm Tom, 25 from Burton-upon-Trent way and I restore aircooled vw's in castle donington for a living.

Here's my coupe. The story behind it is my dad owned it from about 2001ish until 2009 when it came into my hands, after he brought a new car... and another bike.. and my mum told him to get rid of the coupe, so it dropped into my hands rather than selling it . here it is shortly after i took ownership.

first job was to remove the rs2 badges

and not alot happened for a few years, as other project came and went, moving out of my rents place and so on, until now.

Not going to be do doing anything crazy to the motor as i know the abc's are virtually untuneable. But my goal is to make it the best car it can be without spending crazy money on the old gal.

I recently upgraded the front brakes to the G60 items,

i had them blasted then i painted them in some brake paint and rebuilt them with all new seals, nipples ect

didn't get a pic of them fitted up but ive been having alot of trouble with them, they just seem shockingly bad. ive tried bleeding the brake over and over. the traditional way, with a pressure bleeder and a vac bleeder but nothing changed. i did get the the (!) light at start up so presumed it was a faulty bomb to blame, lucky my old man brought one a while back but never got round to fitting it. fitted that up, flushed the system and filled with the correct fluid but to no avail. I have a bunch of other plans down the line, such as new quality pads and some braided hoses but if anyone else has and idea to what it might be that would be appreciated.

another job on the list was to update the interior a bit. i found a steering wheel on ebay out of an a3 and ive also wrapped the wooden trims with some carbon vinyl. Sounds lame but it actually looks real good, i was impressed buy the quality of the vinyl wrap no end.

super happy with it its a pleasure to sit in there now.

cheers mate. i like it too, looks so much better imo

ive also upgraded all of the sound system in it too. Again, i didn't go for anything crazy just subtle mods.

i replaced the dash speakers with some better units and ive also replaced the rear speakers with some 17cm components too. the holes in the new speakers lined up with the plastic post things that attatch the front grill to the doorcard so i just screwed them into there.

i also fitted a slime line active sub into the spare wheel as i didn't want to loose any boot space. and im not one for flashy speakers on show. I recently fitted one under the drivers seat in a customers baywindow and was super impressed buy the quality and bass output, they look like there gonna be pants but there deceivingly good.

the sound system in the car is now really good!

Nice looking coupe, I too like the carbon type film, think it looks good. That sub in the spare wheel is brilliant, where can I get my hands on one? I presume they have a built in amp?

Cheers mate, there by "in phase" and they retail for around ÂŁ200 if you look around online but I found mine on eBay for ÂŁ50 posted and it like new yeah they have a built in amp and come with a volume controller that I've hidden in the under steeringwheel dash tray so it's fully adjustable from the drivers seat. I just made a bracket out of 3mm steal that uses the original screw, that holds the spare in, to secure it. I made it in 2pieces so i can unscrew the sub from the bracket easily incase I need to get to the spare.

                    Cheers mate, thanks

Last job I have on the interior, bar a good steam clean, is to fit this little lot I picked up. Hope it's not too tricky.

Does anyone know of a walkthru for fixing the backlight for the time clock in the speedo?

Should be just a bulb to swap for the clock.

With regards to the trip computer wiring that should be simple to remove from the main loom you have above, just a case of removing a small amount of the tape and it will come out seperately easily.

Cheers guys, thanks for the positive comments. Those first couple of pics really do show my coupe in a good light but it really does look way better in the pics than it actually is haha. A little tlc from a polishing mop is coming shortly.

With restoring old cars for a living I have a habit of photographing everything I do for customers to see, old habits die hard I guess so I've got a couple more updates I'll post up tonight

Last month I gave it a good service, sorted my leaky sump and changed the cambelt, water pump, tensioner ect

Whilst I was at it everything got a good cleaning whilst bolting it back together. I know it's not the big power motor you guys are used to looking at but it runs like a top now n I love it
