Evening all, iv'e only just realised that I started this thread on the S2 forum and iv'e been updating the same thread on the classic audi forum ... just thought id upload the latest updates ... I know its been a while and so if your on the classic audi forum then have a flick through ill put the lnk below ... but this is my last post with a few pictures.

        .....

If youve taken any interest in this thread then youll know that recently I havent really had much luck with the idle and running of the car. On saturday morning a local mechanic (who i know and trust) said that he would have a look (privatly) and see what he could come up with. He had the car for around 2 hours, in that time he cleaned the throttle body, the inside of the fuel pressure regulator and a good clean up of the intake and air filter etc. He also timed the engine up etc ... once he was finished he admitted that he had experienced that same sypmtoms that I have had, i.e the rough idle, surging, spluttering etc etc. When we went to collect the car he had been running it for around an hour on and off so she was warm, jumped in her, started instantly and was running better than she ever has before, if anything the warm idle was a bit high. fourringsrus ..(my dad) took it up the road and back and she pulls soooooo well, instant and powerful delivery etc. Knowing that she might not be so smooth on cold start we hadnt got our hopes up but were optomistic as anyhting that had been done could only have made the engine run better.

We got the car home, and set about cleaning it up underneathe etc., we had all the calipers off, cleaned up the disks and copper slipped all the sliders etc. Really quite happy witht he condition of the pads and disks all round so no worries there. We setr a wire brush on all the metal surfaces and cleaned them up a bit and gave everything a good wipe down.

I went out thismorning to see what she would be like on cold start, and move it onto the tarmac to give it a clean.

It started on the button and was running fine untill it came off of cold start, the idle lowered a bit too much, and she was struggling, she didnt die or try to conk out but was ruinning a bit lumpy, after 5 minutes of that she suddenly cleared and was back to how she was when i picked her up. It seems to me that the "warm" idle is a bit too high but the "cold" idle is a bit too low. And it is only the "transition" from cold start to normal running that has an issue, its not perfect but shes running 2000% better than she has done before and im overjoyed.

She should be going in or an MOT next Saturday, so i set about giving her a quick clean as the car was looking rather dier if the cars clean if gives the impression that she's been "looked" at and maintaned etc .. here are some pictures of what it looked like before I set out:

Admitadlty the camera does the car more justic in the above pics, she looked 10x worse in the flesh.

After a hour or so this is what I had, no polish, just a wash and a quick mist wax and a bit of trim gel etc. This IS NOT the finished product i still have a V6 front bumper to wack on and a decent cut and machine polish

        Here you go : ( theres a few )

Nearly there boys, once she's passed I will be replacing and "potentially" uprating the shocks and springs, there not leaking but are sooooo tired handles more like a boat than anything, more than normal i mean

Thanks alot guys, im nearly there ! A BIG BIG shoutout to everyone thats helped so far, if it werent for all you guys on this great forum then I woould be sat with a 1.4 Polo as my "nice" car

thanks again and i hope you like the pics

        Sam

Here's a link to the thread:

Thanks guys, btw, and input on the whole cold start idle thiong is greatly appreciated ... i know most of you guys on here are 5 pot wizards

        thanks

Cheers buddy, no, they are standards .. they are off of a 20v 90, as the lugs on the originals had snapped.

            Thanks

              Afternoon all,

Just got back from the test station .. she's failed. Nothing major but here's the list.

001 Offside Front position lamp (s) not working [1.1.A.3b]

002 Brake load sensing valve inoperative [3.6.E.3]

003 Exhaust emmissions carbon monoxide content excessive
              [7.3.B.2a]

004 Nearside front Macpherson strut has excessive movement at the upper attachement. [2.5.a.1c]

              Advisory Items:

005 Nearside front suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement [2.4.G.2]

006 Nearside rear wheel bearing has slight play [2.6.2]

007 Offside rear wheel bearing has slight play [2.6.2]

Overall I'm not too dis-heartened I was expecting the top mounts to fail and had a funny feeling about the emmissions the carbon monoxide level was double the limit .. she is running way to rich so I need to have a play with that. So firstly, Im pretty sure the mixture screw is the small hole just behind the fuel regulator and iv'e been told that they are usually a 3mm long reach allan key.

Which way is richen and which way is weaken (anti clockwise/clockwise) ?

Refering to 002, he has told me that the spring is working but the actual break pressure regulaotr isnt operating ? Is the thing serviceable ie. Wd-40 and some moving around ? or is it a replacement job ? .. Iv'e had a brief look on the web and most places are asking upwards of £80 for a new part ... which i dont really want to spend.

Top mounts are ordered up and en-route, the side light bulb isnt a deal at all and the wheel bearings and wishbone bush I will get round to doing once she's up on the road.

Overall, Im staying posotive as If i had decided to do the top mounts before the test and if my man had got the mixture a bit more lean, I could have potentially just had the fail on the brake pressure regulator ... Like i said above what is the deal with this thing, i dont really know much about it but if it is servicable / reparable then please please please give me a heads up

              Many thanks

Just a thought, your idle and mixture problems 'could' simply be caused by an air leak on the inlet or the pipe work to the ISV, have you checked all this thoroughly?

Many people have suggested this, and the surging that i occasionally get on idle does point towards this, however i have checked all the hoses that i can see and all rubber ones seem fine.

However ... there is a hose/pipe that is made out of some sort of fibre/weaving sort of stuff, that comes from the bottom of the air box affair and heads off towards the exhaust manifold, this is sheared in half ... what is this ? and could it be causing the problem ?

                  thanks
