ABY'd UR quatt, 400 would be nice

Ive decided its time to start a project thread although writing about my car is the closest I'll get to my project for a while due to the arrival of my baby boy. The plan was to finish it before he arrived but I just fell short, a bit of input on the finishing touches would be welcomed though.

    A brief history:-

It started life as a UR quattro 10V WR engine and received the Treser engine mods before my ownership.
I bought it and caught the tuning bug but about the same time the engine bay caught fire big time.
Rather than spend the insurance cash on standard replacement parts I thought what a great excuse to fit 034 efi.
After my own poor mapping and melting the remaining world supply of oversize pistons for the 10V I converted to ABY 20V

Older and wiser, the car ran fine for a while then broke again when the shaft snapped on the K26/T04e hybrid I was using, the perfect excuse to fit a GT3071r

So, after another few months in the garage the spec is now as follows. Reading other threads on here I think it will be good for my 400 bhp target.

    Engine mods
    RS2 EM
    Siemens Deka 55 Lb/hr (577 cc/min) injectors
    Side mount twin-pass intercooler
    K24/GT3071R hybrid turbo (MD357)
    034 efi CII ECU
    Water injection (almost installed)
Clutch sourced through Aelred - good for 750NM

    The rest:
    Koni shocks
    solid subframe mounts
    Porsche 4 pot brakes

Work still to do and think about includes:
Get it mapped - by a pro - anyone know a good one who can or is willing to try an 034 efi system.
Cooling - will it be up to it with the aux rad removed and only a standard main rad (in the UK).
Water injection - lots of thoughts here, where to inject and what boost pressure. Will it be mapped into main timing table or just left to affect inlet temp table.

Put it back on the standard ecu as there are 3 people I know of that can map it to good effect and you should see 430 ish on a 3071r

What intercoolers did you use and any pics of your handy work ?

Ok, not had a go at image posting before but here goes. Hopefully in Chronological order:-

It doesnt look too pretty but considering what it looked like after the fire its a big step in the right direction.

It is a Treser airbox indeed. It was quite resistant to the heat of the fire and I managed to sell it on after dusting off the ash and giving it a respray.

How have you got on with the solid subframe mounts? Any negative effects?

              Good luck

I want to avoid the extra work of fitting Motronic if possible (different crank trigger and Im missing a MAF sensor) but may do if I cant find a good 034 tuner.

Im only using a single intercooler but its a twin pass (image shows inlet and outlet same side). Its off an audi 200 acccording to the tipex on the side and is the biggest I could find that fits as a side mount. The core measures to about 5000 cm3. I imagine the bennefit of the air passing through it twice is offset by the fact that it will travel through twice as fast so less time to cool.

Nope, the only negative was getting the bolts out to change them. Not too harsh on the speed bumps and the handling is nice and tight. I have kept the OEM wishbone mounts though to keep some flex in the system.

Imo ditch the 034 ECU, sell it to the states where there are people that use it and better support for it, and if you want standalone, get something different.
VEMS, Autronic, Vipec and Motec would probably have much better support in the UK.

I am not saying this to bash 034, just you are very unlikely to find a tuner in the UK who has experience with their ECU.

I can't believe its been over a year since I posted on my project thread, I thought it was nearly finished but as is usually the case I decided on further mods and the car still hasn't hit the road.

Looking at other project threads and some of my previous mapping logs I predicted I would short fall of my 400bhp target due to fuel delivery, exhaust back pressure and Inlet temps, hence the additional changes.

Fuel delivery was simply fitting replacing the old CIS pump with an 044 - job done.

On the exhaust side I thought the back pressure from my 2.5 inch system wouldn't flow enough so I bought an RS2 downpipe and modified the the bottom half to cater for a 3 inch by pass valve, this then mates back onto my 2.5 system. The idea being its not too loud on tick over on cruising but when on boost the the valve opens increasing flow - and making an interesting sound Im sure.

Also on the exhaust side, my KKK .6 A/R hotside has been tipped as being too restrictive. As a .82 is expensive and has other knock on effects at extra cost, (bigger turbine wheel, and bigger downpipe flange), I decided to keep the #6 and have it gas flowed, it should help top end power and hopefully reduce surge too. You wont appreciate the A/R changes from the images but they do show its shiny.

This is the one JP did right? He said it had changed it to almost 0.7A/R, what was the result on the car?

It is indeed JPs handywork, Ive yet to get the turbo back on the car so cant feedback yet. It will be combined with a few other mods too so I wont be able to give a back to back comparison but will certainly comment on the feel of the car and dyno output when the days comes.

Well I finally got it mapped a couple of weeks back. Before I hit the rolling road I knew it would fall short of my target due to the high IATs as my intercooler isn’t up to the job, temps were in the 70’s degrees C but more on that another day.

On the way there it felt pretty good on the base map (plus a few tweaks by me) and I had predicted it was running 250 bhp from the dyno in the seat of my pants. The baseline test actually showed only 200bhp – the same as when it rolled out the factory with the old 10v engine, but the rewards of my efforts came to light a few hours later when it came of the runners at 360bhp and 400Ibft=540Nm. The drive home was awesome. I don’t feel the need to chase the missing 40 horses just yet but I have notice my custom air box is starting to distort with the heat so more work is needed to address this which may bump the power a little more.
