    Alex,

Thanks for sharing all of the details big and small of how you got on with this UrS4. Helps to make me feel better about my cars, when I see others 'suffering' - Sorry.

    Quick couple of 'questions'.

    1. How much is a new mirror switch? (The 'bulbs' inside can be fixed but I can't / don't feel confident doing it).

    2. Heater Motor, consider replacing the Matrix with a dealer supplied matrix, expensive, but you'll never want to do this job again on the car.

    3. After run pump - I presume you mean the two pin sensor ?

    4. Suspension - my own suggestion based on daily'ing my own UrS6 saloon would be Bilstein sports shocks to match lowered H&R 29800 springs - The lower the car and take the 4x4 look off the wheel arches but still allow the underneath not to scrape 'pillow' speed ramps.

If the budget allows source UrS6 plus rims - 8x17 with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres in 255x40x17.

Won't be quite as 'hard' as 255x35x18 on Mk 1 S8 Avus rims - 8x18.

    5. What clutch did you use to replace your 'broken up' clutch ? Is the pedal any lighter ?
I presume your pedal is not squeaking ? The early signs of the pedal box cracking due to an old and heavy to operate clutch. BTDT.

Why or how did the smoke / water issue clear itself ?

    Thanks.

        1. Think I paid about 8.00GBP for the mirror switch from a spare parts dealer on ebay, if you search around you can find really cheap bits - in good condition. I did not want to replace the bulbs either as it looks like a solder job. Hoping the replacement unit is working or else I don't mind opening up the spare part to sort it.

        2. Yes, the job that i'm dreading. Its working for the minute but not blowing much air at all. Think I might be able to squeeze the motor through the unit as its a UK car, apparently its just about possible to do. Tried a few years back and almost got it done but had to quickly put it back together. Otherwise I will hold out until the summer and pull the whole unit out and do the matrix too.

        3. Yes the 2 pin sensor. Tried swapping the wires around thinking it could be that, but shorting the pins gets the fan and pump working so it must be the 2-pin temp sensor? They seem easily available via ebay.

        4. She needs lowering badly - looks wise and the existing shocks are shot to pieces! I have been looking at supersport shocks and springs as the prices are reasonable and I am on a budget due to purchasing my first house. Some people on here seem to have used them with OK results. The choice was between 60/35 and 40-45/35. I was veering more towards the 60mm at the front as the arch gap is huge due to the car having standard non-sport suspension. I have done the measurements and that should still leave a reasonable arch gap to run my current 16"s with a 50 profile and then the 18"s with a 35 profile. Do you think this would work OK the front would be just too low? Would be interested to see a picture of your setup to compare

I would love a set of S6 plus wheels (attached is an old poster that has been on my wall for many years - my dream UrS setup!), but they are mega money and not seen a set come up for years! I do however have a set of 17" Bolero's with the ET35 and 45 degree lip that are pretty tasty. Deciding between using them or going with the ET48 18" Avus from the S8 or even better, the ET45? 18" Avus from the B5 or B6.... I still need to check and do calculations. I think the avus in any offset I have seen would need spacers though?

        5. I replaced the clutch with the OEM sachs PP and unsprung disk. Seems to do the job. If I was to do it again I would have gone for a SMF and sprung disk from a higher power motor, its a bit lazy after driving it properly now - certainly not something I worry about though. Also not sure how much power the OEM will hold but was told it would be good up to RS2 levels, and assume that a GT3071 would be less peak torque so should be OK - I'm just guessing here! Lets hope I get to find out! Part of me wants to keep a KKK turbo though, I just love the noise they make spooling and the old school power delivery - even on the 7000. Wonder what the max HP is on the RS2 turbo with stock AAN internals, imagine that turbo could bend rods easily with too much boost though

Pedals are not squeaking. I inspected the entire housing when I had the clutch problems. I also fitted a new Slave and master cylinder so the clutch operation is pretty smooth.

Checked yesterday morning and she is still loosing coolant, not a huge amount at all. Not sure if it is internal or external. My gut feeling is a small head gasket leak, although it doesn't overheat and doesn't smoke after it's properly warm so not sure? Guess I need to do a block test or compression. Also need to do new spark plugs soon so that might give some clues.

Temp gauge seems pretty rock solid just over 90 and has been like that ever since I repaired the gauge.

Yup classic audi ownership is certainly not for the faint hearted, that's the part you do don't get told when you buy one. Would I change it now though, probably not!
