    Avant s2 volcano

So i have an Ebay problem and i think i should go to meetings every Thursday.

I was looking for some leather trim for my TDI when this S2 came up in the search.
It read "standing since 2009, unfinished project, doesn't start, no T&T ect,,
oh and it was over 100miles away.
I wanted to save it from the breakers, which was clearly where it would go for its £1000 price tag. It was only for sale less than 1 hour

It stopped running in 2009 and it was left in a lockup.

I bought it back next day.
The owner knew quite a bit and was in quattro owners club, he had it over 10yrs.
He had done lots to it while it was laid up, new clutch, new rads, new hoses, braided brake lines, de cat, ball joints, t/rod ends ect ect and it had a full service history, all the books ect... I was happy to be saving it.

Wait so how many do you have now...

1000 quid for this is pretty cheap though.
I mean even if the engine is screwed, if the rest of it isn't too bad it's still a good buy.

Excellent. Looks to be a cracker, just the owner lost faith/interest in it. I think there should be a medal for saving avants.

Volcano black with black leather, AC and a sunroof, its probably how i would have orderd one new.

So the first thing, why wont it start?
Checked for oil pressure and the timing marks highlited with tippex.
There was no fuel comming up and the fuel was smelling like a tramps **** so new pump and fuel.

          Still no go.

The previous owner had been told crank sensors and changed them. I gave it a blink test at first it said crank sensor, but i hadn't spun it over, hence what he had been told....after spinning it over it blinked cam sensor fault. I used PRJs trick of flashing the wires to get it to bridge, this worked and it fired.
The happy moment didnt last long.. it sounded like a bag of nails and it wasnt just lifters. I blipped the throttle and it died. WTF? as i spun it over again it had no compression... (thats when i came begging on here) after a while i noticed those timing marks in tippex were actualy about 4 teeth out.
          Explain..
While it has been sat not running, the owner had changed the cam sensor, and put the belt back in the wrong place. No damage was done on cranking as the lifters were empty due to sitting. The cam sensor didnt fire as it was out of sync, it was actualy fine. when i ran it the lifters filled up and bent the valves.

          Only 2...

          new valves..

I left parafin in the chambers over night and the others were fine..

Now, on the bright side i got a look at the bores ect..

            Apart-

            Together-

            Coolant bleed/ test run

            FFS, is that a missfire?

Il run it up the street and see if it clears,

            [img]http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/5035/s2en

A little while later.... it didnt clear - lost temper :

Which made it clear and run perfectly, or so i thought..

Low compression on no3, despite it holding the parafin it wasnt sealing and needed to come apart again, only this time i didnt mind doing it properly as i now knew the engine was sweet.

Here are all the offenders together, the 3rd one along was the one, you can see by the colour.

Thought I may as well have all the valves out this time to make sure and also I fitted new stem seals.

This time I got a propper multi layer thick gasket

I fitted a new timing belt kit , water pump, aux belts and spark plugs last week so not much left for the service bits.

The turbo return pipe was leaking

Then I started the rebuild, stripping/painting , polishing throttle body and ports ect..

Rebuilt after a good strip and clean

                  A bit of scruff..

I had thoughts if it didnt tidy up well o drive right it would be an engine donor for my 86 CQ and id sell this on rolling.

but OMG, little effort and ...

                  Some plastic conditioner

and a bucket and sponge/brush & time. It still needs polish and detail but it looks like a tidy car now.

You may notice that the bumper lights have been removed, that is because the fogs were faded to yellow.

You can see here the top one -

10 mins in the oven to remove the glass, give it some wheel silver..

                    and glue/seal back together

It is now on a homefries ECU (thanks driftin jo) and pulls nice, i do think it has a boost leak but i had to leave UK for a bit and will sort it when im home.

It drives Exacly as it should and all the common fails are sorted, its interior is next..

                      The bay

Started to re-fit interior, lots more to do on this.

                      Wanted list-

*Some sort of lower springs or coilover suspension and stiffer on the front.
*A large bore SS exhaust so I can actualy hear the 5 pot.
*Some 17/18" dished wheels, preferably split rims.
                      * a pair of S2 badges.
*A pair of black leather Recaros, cosworth/RS2/GTV not worried which.
*An Audi sport quattro steering wheel to replace the ugly airbag item.
*A set of 4 pots and big discs on the front.

I also need a bit of paintwork, dash bulbs and lots more tidying.

I forgot to mention the spares...

It came full of bits, if you need anything let me know.
spare turbo, carbon inserts, window regs, new arch liners, ac system, cant remember much but i weighed in the cats and got £80

Fantastic effort, its good to see another being saved. Looks like you didn't spend too much to get it running/cleaned up. Inspiring thread, thanks for sharing.

I'm interested in the carbon inserts if it is for the airbag doorcards.
                          Cheers, Torben

I only have the 4x door inserts, no dash part. (are airbag door cards the same?)

And, yes it was done cheaply but with a headache.
With some of the parts sold and all the new bits including chips it owes me about £1300 now, for an MOT ready fully serviced S2 - quite happy.

*in the pics you will see the drivers front wing has been replaced with the wrong black, if anyone has a volcano drivers wing -
