It could be E30 IX style, with a prop running through the sump.
Would it be possible to transfer drive from the front diff input shaft and out to the front somehow?SSComment
-
Not enough room for that. If you look where the "front" (nrst to flywheel) diff/drive flanges should be, it looks like they came up with a single output driven by what would have been the front pinion. No need for a front diff but the "front" drive shaft is still useful. You can see the prop shaft running under the bellhousing. Up front it looks like they used a gear box to get things rotating the correct direction.
Something that I considered in the past for a mid-engined 4x4 was using a FWD engine and transmission turned sideways for front and rear outputs. Of course, for going slowly offroad having the additional reduction of the FWD final drive is desired but could be an issue for going fast onroad. Also, you'd have to make sure everything was spinning on the correct direction. I'd use one of the new 07k I5s from a rabbit or jetta and, maybe, DSG

Can anyone comment this (Ideas/problems)?Right now we think the best way to get AWD and good weight distribution is to make a system similar to the Nissan GTR, but reversed. Engine near rear axle and gearbox near the front axle connected with a main drive shaft. The main differential coupled right after the gearbox, with a drive shaft going to the back differential. The front differential is coupled to the main differential.Comment

Yes, in the drawing a bit of the shaft driving the rear differential can clearly be seen exiting the gearbox in front of the engine, and then passing under the engine, through the sump. That seems to be not good (elevates the car CG, and adds two high stress o-rings prone to leakage and high maintenance).Comment

How much can a skyline gearbox cost? And how would the fitting to a S2 engine work?Easiest way to do it would be to keep the engine in the front and use a skyline gearbox. You could then move the engine all the way back behind the front axle if you wanted and have a stand alone front diff. This would basically give you the same set up as the KRB quattro. Andrew Gallachers spaceframed focus is also the same but using cosworth running gear.Comment

But it is a very good compromise and if running a dry sump you don't sacrifice too much CoG.
It is the way Nissan did it with the Skyline GT-R and Ford with the 4x4 Cosworths.
GT-R bits aren't cheap. You'd need to make up a custom adapter plate and flywheel

Didn't knew Nissan did that with the GT-R. They did it with the new one, or with the skyline?
Just by curiosity, how did VW group solved the mid-engine/AWD "problem" with the Veyron?Comment
-
R32 to R34 all use similar layout. R35 used a rear transaxle with a 2nd driveshaft sending output to the front diff.
IIRC the Veyron had the transmission mounted in fron the engine with integral tansfer box, sending output then front and rear to the diffs

R32/3/4 style

GTR
Some Jag setup, same as skyline style

You should be able to put the engine where you want by changing prop length?
If you went down the Nissan route would you hook up the sensors to get ATTESA working?Current-2004 Impreza PPP wagon

i think the f150 ? from ford years ago had a similar setup as above because quadraduese had the drive train installed in a 32 ford coupe, it was able to handle the power of supercharged small bock v8`s so could be something to look for as the price maybe cheaper than newer exotics, early 1990`s so could be wrong.
i am sure there will be other setups that are similar like range rover etc but for being able to handle the power of a tuned motor the f150 drive train should sufficeComment
