Mother Nature is giving us a mild time at the moment.......just wait until early 2014.......keep the quattro.......you'll be glad when others struggle and you carry on

If it it were me.....i'd keep it stock, use regularly and enjoy paying what you did

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm in no rush to do this as is, should be a giggle in the snow ! And I intend to keep this car for future use, ie track day, engine swaps, and over the years end up with something special. But I just want to be different, I know the purists and guys that are older will pull their hair out at the thought. But I'm young, It's costing me virtually nothing, and should be a hoot remember, this is all hypothetical ! However ... Now that I've been offered the box and diff already locked, it doesn't make my choice any easier !

Nice. I like the idea of being naughty and going rwd.

Find the rear diff controller. Cut the blue and white wire. No more speed related disengaging of the diff.

RWD is fun, but I love the quattro more for everyday driving, you don't get that, oh no, I cant floor it because it is wet at the traffic light syndrome.

My other car is RWD and you can light up the rear tyres all the way down the road and although my car is very controllable, you still have to be more careful than I have to be the quattro.

To my mind, quattro is great for people who aren't great drivers and like to give it the beans in places you cant normally do without crashing!

I understand why people like RWD though, there is nothing like leaving a big black lines down the road and a cloud of tyre smoke as you go! Although you do pay for it in rear tyres lol

It was all aboput something different for me, its just a bonus that this came up silly cheap. Gonee have to replace the exhaust though, its been sat too low for too long and has just been grated out on speed bumps. And in regards to cutting wires on the diff control ? where is the speed sensor/controll located ? and will i lose my speedo ?

You won't lose anything just difflock will not disable itself at certain speed.

                        RWD is FUN
I cut my teeth in my teens on these and I don't think I owned a FWD car in that time.
V8 SD1's, Escort Mexico's and RS's all good fun and very controllable.

BUT, quattro is ? Well its legendary isn't it !
Saved me a few times when I was (ahem) carrying a bit too much speed round a bend

I think what dufflecoat was trying to say is that a quattro it will not turn you into a rally driver (well I hope he was anyway)
For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

I think people should do what they want with their cars, so power to you, however, personally, I would keep the 80 as a daily, and if funds allowed, pickup either a cheap 318is for about £800, or if I could stump £2K, pick up a Toyota Supra 3L manual Non-Turbo (which I think is one of the greatest underrated and overlooked cheap buys out there)

The only thing that ever scared me about my S2 was how squeemish it was under braking, the rear would just break loose

Needless to say, I had a good poke around underneath and replaced a number of parts, bushes, mounts as well as the brakes after one particularly scary moment under braking

Making a quattro RWD is taking away its one saving grace and making it into a heavy, unbalanced and bad handling car that is then also a liability with a light rear end. A bit like dressing up Jimmy Saville as a 'party clown... its only going to go badly.

I appreciate all the opinions guys, my intentions are not to just RWD it and leave it as is, but as time and money allows, keep it going as a long term project. I agree at the end of the day, by locking a diff and removing the driveshafts it will be a fat, unbalanced car, but with a bit more time and money this can be overcome. It has to be better than my friends Volvo 360 .. Either way, I know a lot of you guys will look at think I'm a moron etc .. But I just want to have a fairly unique and different car. I could have gone out and got a cheap BMW, but I didn't want to, that's what everyone does. Either way ! I'm sure I'll have a bit of fun with it
